Now the question is who can drive in Texas?
Residents with valid unexpired Texas driver’s license and nonresidents - Driving privilege reciprocity allows a person to use a valid, unexpired foreign license to operate a motor vehicle in Texas for up to 1 year or until a person becomes a Texas resident, whichever date is sooner. Once a person becomes a new Texas resident, they must apply for a Texas license within 90 days to continue to drive legally. For more information, please review the Moving to Texas page.

Getting a learner’s permit is one of the first steps that teens and young adults take to becoming a licensed driver. Then to apply for Drivers License.
A learners permit allows the student driver to legally drive with a licensed driver over the age of 21 in the passenger seat.
There are a number of steps that are taken to getting your learners permit in Texas, including starting Drivers Ed. If you know how the system works ahead of time, you can plan out your actions ahead of time, enroll in the right courses, fulfill all your driving requirements, and earn your driving privileges.

How to Apply for a Texas Driver License.
Before your local Driver License Office Visit. Just ensure that you have the below documents.
The Texas Driver’s Handbook is available online to help you qualify for a Texas driver license.
1. U.S. Citizenship or, if you are not a U.S. Citizen, evidence of lawful presence
2. Texas Residency
3. Identity, and
4. Social Security Number
5. I have provided by Leasing Agreement, valid passport, valid visa extension notice, Electricity bill, SSN – all should be original – they wont accept copies without the originals.
7. Evidence of Texas Vehicle Registration* for each vehicle you own. Registration must be current. Visit Texas DMV vehicle registration for more information (New Residents who are surrendering an out-of-state driver license only)
8. Proof of Insurance* for each vehicle you own
*If you do not own a vehicle, you will sign a statement affirming this.
You may download this brochure for information to assist you in determining which documents you may have that will meet these requirements.
Additionally, you will need to provide evidence of completion of:
1. Impact Texas Driver (ITD) if you will be taking a driving test for the issuance of your driver license
2. A six-hour adult Driver Education course,
a. If you are between the age of 18 - 25. You must complete Adult Drivers Education course before you can start learning to drive your motor vehicle. (Does not apply to new residents who are 18 years of age or older and surrendering a valid, unexpired out-of-state driver license)
All new drivers over the age of 25 who plan to earn a Texas driver’s license need to pass a test at DPS office. You can take this test by spending time waiting at the DPS and feeling stuffy while taking a supervised written exam, or you can take online adult drivers ed course for Texas and complete the test hassle-free.
Once you have gathered the necessary documents and completed the required courses, you will need to do the following:
1. Complete the driver license application before arriving at your local office (This form is also available at all driver license offices).
2. Make an appointment at a driver license office. Try early morning from 6:30 till 8 o’clock, I am sure you will get an appointment for the same day. If appointments are not available in your locality, try for nearby location.
3. Provide the following documentation to the license and permit specialist:
• Application for the issuance of a driver license
4. Provide your signature for DL or ID.
5. Provide your thumbprints.
6. Have your picture taken.
7. Pay the application fee.
Once you have the learners permit – go to a third-party provider for driving training or test as per your requirements. If you clear your road test, the driving school will provide a clearance letter in a sealed envelope which we need to submit in DPS office. For submitting this, you need to take another appointment. Try online early morning from 6:30 till 8:00 for getting same day appointment.
8. Pass the vision exam.
9. Take and pass the knowledge and driving tests.

I got my learner's permit and passed my driving test from a dps athurized third party driving school and got the sealed involved. Now should i bring all those documents again which i took with me for getting my learners permit?( like utility bill, Texas residency proof etc) or the sealed involved, learners permit, SSN, and immigrant visa passport are enough documents to submit for getting the driving licence?

Hello, when to take the DPS exam for learners permit? Is it before visiting DPS office for documents verification or during the verification visit itself?

Hi, I did my test online and went to DPS and applied for permit. And after 2weeks I got my DL and saying limited term. Can I use this or I still need a licensed adult next to me for me to be able to drive? I’m kind of confused. The one I got is exactly you showed in your video.

I am on h4 visa, will be applying for the license first time. You have mentioned that it’s not mandatory for those above 25 to take 6 hours course but have to take a test at DPS office. What is that test exactly and when to take it?
I have my SSN, so should start with completing application and scheduling an appointment?

Hi there @Tint & Travel,

I'm close to Plano and landed in US few months back. I'm a dependent and I don't have a SSN. I've completed Aceable six hours adult driver edu. However,

1. Do we need a SSN to apply for Drivers license/learners permit ?

2. I've also seen the dates which are very far in the future. Is there a way to get early dates?

Thanks

Hi, I just passed the road test from an DPS authorized third party school and the person who took my test gave me the envelope as you said in the video and now I want to do the same-day appointment at DPS for my Driver's license, which opens at 6-7:15 am in the morning and while applying through that I got confused on what to select?? Should I select Apply for First time texas DL/Permit or Change, replace or renew DL / permit? because for my permit I did go through first time DL/permit but I passed my road test and all now I'm unsure where to proceed?? I hope you can clarify me on this!

Hi @Tint & Travel,
I have two concerns:
1. I just moved to Plano, Taxes for 6 months, is this long enough to use the Leasing agreement and recent electricity bill as proof of Texas residency?
2. My F-1 visa on my passport has expired, but I am currently on F-1 OPT status and have a valid EAD. Can I use this to apply for a DL/Permit?
