My mom took me to a record store in the mall when I was a kid. I wanted to buy Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch. The guy at the counter tells my mom "you don't want to buy this, it's crap." My mom asks what i should buy then. He said "Ride The Lightening." A Metallica fan was born that day.

The opening "riff" is actually Cliff (RIP) on a distorted bass and wah pedal.

This whole album is legendary, as is Kill em All, Master of Puppets and And Justice For All.

This song is off of their 2nd album titled "Ride the Lightning" which came out in 1984 so this is their early stuff back when Cliff Burton was alive and in the band.

First song I played live with my band as a bassist. Still remember playing that opening riff standing in the spotlight

The song is based on (and named after) Ernst Hemingway's novel, "For Whom the Bell Tolls" (1940).

Old school Metallica, love it! I recommend Master of Puppets or Blackened next.

The song is related to the book For whom the bell tolls by Ernest Hemingway. The book deals with the Spanish Civil War and I believe there is even a scene near the end, where they are on a hill with no way of escape.

Old school Metallica is amazing... their first 4 albums Kill 'em All, Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets & And Justice for all... After that, they are more polished and the awesome songs are a little more spread out. Back in the day people said they sold out with 'Justice but I disagree. Justice is where they show off how technically amazing they have become... and after that they are more "polished"

The "transition" began with their homonymous album (Better known as the black album), also, the riff from the beginning isn't played with guitar, but with bass, thank you Cliff

Cliff was the one who played the opening riff. ON A BASS!!! freaking awesome.

First four Metallica albums are almost mandatory for metal. When they released the black album, it was both a blessing and a curse. A blessing because they became more mainstream and expanded their fan base. But a curse, because the die hard metal fans thought they went soft by going more radio friendly. By the time Load and Reload were released in the mid 90s, they became less metal and experimented with their sound, adding in elements of grunge and even blues and country. By then the fans were pretty much divided. It's been within the past decade or so that they went back to their roots and went back to metal. Death Magnetic and Hardwired have solid songs.

I’d love to hear this for the first time again. Still crushing, 35 years later.

When Metallica ruled the world! You gotta react to their masterpiece "Master Of Puppets"!! It´s about drug addiction and is considered one of the most influential songs of metal and one of their best tracks if not the best!

Lars isn't a "bad" drummer. He's just not as flashy and technical as the guys that get the attention. You don't hear him doing crazy fills and wildly creative patterns like a lot of prog drummers. His drumming serves the purpose for Metallica's music extremely well, though. He's also a HUGE driving piece of the band and they wouldn't have become what they are without him. Respect the Lars!
