When I think Mustang GT, the first thing I think is sound
But then I think speed
This is the most powerful Mustang GT in ford’s lineup currently with 480hp and 600lbft of toque going to a front motor and rear motor for AWD traction. HOWEVER, this is the performance pack, which is another $5000, but you do get another 34lbft of torque along with some other things we’ll talk about later
This Mach E GT does bear the Mustang name and all the heritage that carries so they did keep the Mustang in mind when designing it
HOWEVER, the car they benchmarked when focusing on the technical stuff? That’s the Tesla Model Y
And rightfully so, as Tesla is the brand synonymous with EVs so if you want to rise to the top of the heap that;s your target
And Ford did a great job here. The Mach E GT packs significantly power power than the Tesla Model Y Performance, but it does fall short to the Tesla in an important way
The GT here uses a 88kWh battery pack and Ford claims range at 270 miles, but I charged it up this week and at 100% off the charger it was showing 240
Sure this could be a result of the driving style and harsh life of a press car, BUT that’s the least range in the Mach E lineup AND a lot less than the 303 miles in the Tesla
And then there’s the public charging infrastructure to talk about.
Simply put, nothing currently compete’s with tesla’s supercharger network
But the reality is over 90% of the time most people will be plugging in at home and lettin it charge overnight so you have to decide if that matters to you. It’s not to say you CANT charge away from your house in the Mach E, but just be aware of broken chargers, slow charging times, and an overall unpredictable nature of things
But this is a Mustang and it says GT on the back so how does this thing drive when you’re on it?
Well as we’ve sid, it’s fast AF - 0-60 in a reported 3.5 seconds
Which isn’t bad for the 5000lbs curb weight
But that weight is more a concern in the corners and under braking
Braking for a corner you’re really working the 15 inch brembos up front and 12 in the rear, but they DO have great stopping power
I did do a really hard braking test and the pedal brakes did have a little chatter after that, but after driving for another few miles with lighter braking they smoothed out again
Then there’s the turn in, which is really fast from the steering and there’s a good feeling heft to the steering
The Pirelli P Zero tires hang on well mid corner and teh suspension and chassis stays in check the whole time
And then as you transition to power do NOT stab at the throttle because you’ve got over 600 lbft here and you can overwhelm the traction and slide around
But dynamically, the weight isn’t really much of a problem at the limit
One thing that helps is the meg ride damping which keeps the car so neutral through a corner at speed. You do have a strut front suspension and a multilink rear so the front end will push a little around mid corner if you ask too much of it or get on power. However, during normal driving the car does remind you of its weight by seeming to thud over bumps. Under normal, relaxed driving conditions, the normal Mach E I would say has a better ride, but that’s true of really any performance trim version of a car
Yeah under normal driving there are some compromises here, but the car is still really smooth, easy to drive, and refined feeling
You have good visibility, although the wing mirrors feel like a weird shape and almost feel small
But no, as an EV, as a car, as a thing to get you from place to place, it’s fun when you want it to be and pretty relaxing when you need it to so i think Ford did a great job with this
