Disney is going to be hitting us with another live-action adaptation of an animated classic when ALADDIN hits theaters next year. Will Smith has some pretty massive shoes to fill as the Genie after Robin Williams’ iconic turn as the character, but we’re excited to see what he does with it! Today we’re going to be taking a look at two theories about the 1992 animated version of Aladdin that so many of us grew up with and loved as kids. One of them says that the entire movie is just Genie granting Aladdin’s first wish of making him a prince. The other says that the whole movie takes place in a post apocalyptic future! Check out the theories and let us know in the comment section which one you think is the most likely to be true!

"Genie, make me a sandwich!"
*turns Aladdin into a sandwich*

Why not both? This solution is super easy, barely an inconvenience.

Genie did say, “Al, you’re not going to find a girl like this in a million years. Trust me. I know. I’ve looked”

To me this would imply that he isn’t all knowing, but rather, one of his previous masters used genie to travel to the future, witnessing the third century and it’s fashion, our time and the other million years.

Now you might be wondering about the nukes and the stop signs, well, I propose that genie’s last master was an evil sorcerer trying to bring futuristic weapons back to take over the world, he was stopped by another good magician, who not only defeated the evil one, but also set up a system to ensure that only a pure heart could find the lamp. The diamond in the rough.

I’ve always hated the future theory. Tons of Disney movies have anachronisms, it’s just how they get the jokes across. Take Hercules. Did Ancient Greece have franchising or shoe lines and themed cups? Highly doubt it.
Also it would’ve been a waste hiring Robin Williams and not have him do impersonations of famous people.

The first theory totally makes sense. I LOVE it. As for the second, none of that pop culture stuff was scripted. It was Robin Williams' genius ad libbing. I just don't think that without those elements a couple of video game stop signs aren't enough to sell me.

Merlin and the Genie probably talked about the future on several occasions.

The first theory actually blew my mind. I actually never thought of that before. I am going with that one, because the other stuff can simply be explained as humor done by Disney, just because you know its Robin Williams, of course he is going to do those things..

Actually Saying “I wish for you to make me a sandwich” would make the genie TURN YOU INTO A SANDWICH. So by that logic the genie would have turned alladin into
somebody else who was a prince.

I'm definitely more here for theory 1. It's going to make me watch Aladdin with a new perspective which is cool, but the second theory is assuming we're following the Gregorian calendar. The world is billions of years old, and I'm more prepared to believe in a genie who has seen the future and can, therefore, make references to media and cult classics because of this, rather than Aladdin being post-apocalyptic. The Genie being surprised humanises him, and it's fun seeing an ultimate-cosmic-power getting played every now and then.

It is the fulfillment of Aladin's first wish in the post apocalyptic world. Problem solved

How about both theories because when the genie was trying to find a way for Aladdin to get around yeah one time turn Abu into a car. How else would he have known about cars if it wasn't in the future. I know it's all about being funny and making good on the comedy. As for Aladdin's first wish he didn't become an actual Prince until the end. Where's the sultan change the law.

One problem I think a lot of theorists overlook when making speculations about cartoons and TV shows is that both are meant to be funny or childish and are not intended to be taken seriously. The primary purpose of cartoons like Aladdin I think is to provide entertainment for children, and not to establish a complex world of characters and settings that have hidden profound realities. I'm not saying that the creators of Aladdin didn't actually form a world beyond the surface one we see in the film, which we superficially expect to be some Arabian city, I'm just saying it is unlikely, considering the creators probably took on the mindset of a child and simply configured a comedic animation of pure amusement. For instance, when the genie said he's been in the lamp for 10, 000 years, it probably wasn't meant to be taken as an accurate measure of time, but rather a funny, childlike hyperbole of an extended period of time.

I've always wondered why Aladdin didn't just free the Genie first and then ask for his help wooing Jasmine after. Would kinda have foiled Jaffar's plans from the word go.

Genie truly is all sing but the problem with being an All-Seeing being is that even though they are all seeing they still are completely incapable of seeing anything directly related to their own fate or at least that's how it's explained in a lot of different books and movies that I've watched and read throughout my life

There's also the thought that time is circular. Genie was around for all future events and just remembers them when the loop begins again . Kind of a groundhog day, but on a universal scale

i think the first theory is more true. just because the genie was in the bottle doesn't mean he couldn't see/percieve things from beyond the bottle. Also, i think they're reading into the small things genie refferneces to far, it's a Disney movie. They put it in cause they knew part of the joke would be that the genie /shouldn't/ know pop culture from our time. it's just a joke....

also i know i have a bunch of spelling errors here lmao
