2022 Volkswagen Taos | MotorWeek Road Test

While SUVs are getting smaller and smaller, carmakers seem to be packing more and more into them. Case in point, the Volkswagen Taos, their smallest current SUV. So let’s find out how much it adds to the small crossover scene.

I have been driving VWs since 1973 and currently have three. I prefer their smaller models because they are more fun. If the Taos came with a manual transmission I would have to buy one. One of my VWs is a Corrado that I bought new in 1992. Before buying it I watched Motorweek review it, when Mr. Davis and I were much younger men with hair.

We have a 2020 Tiguan and 2023 Taos, both being 4 Motion. Big selling point on both vehicles was the large amount of room in the back seat area. Room wise, the most noticeable difference is in the rear cargo area where the Tiguan is a little larger. Both have a comfortable ride, but I prefer the Taos for it's handling, feeling a little more crisp and controlled. The engine/drivetrain combination in the Taos is a little more responsive and feels quicker than the Tiguan, despite having an engine a half litre less in displacement. Neither seem to have excessive oil consumption problems like our last two Subarus had. Getting away from CVT transmissions is a plus, too.

The only thing I like is the infotainment screen, it doesn't stick up like most others.

Geez! Why so much hate?? Lol and all comments are mostly from perspective.
Not because I own one, but honestly I’m in love with this hot drive. It’s elegant it’s sporty, it’s super spacious from the inside, it’s easy to drive, low on gas mileage, awesome trunk, the sunroof is honestly magical (huge and doesn’t cut on the middle). I can go on and on.

Just recently got the Taos SE, had VW Tiguan SE which I liked…..just decided this being a bit smaller is better for me. Am really enjoying it. The color I chose is PLATINUM GRAY METALLIC.

In Europe this vehicle is the Skoda Karoq and the SEAT Ateca, same vehicle with a little badge engineering. Now the VW Group is bringing it to North America ...

I feel like the 4 motion (which probably has launch control due to it being a dsg) would accelerate a bit quicker

The Taos is a great vehicle IF it is reliable. And that’s the problem. Already new buyers are having issues, especially with the AWD version, to the point VW was forced to do a stop sale. It’s like VW rushed the Taos out the door before it was fully ready and are now scrambling to fix things.

I wouldn’t touch the first year model, but it might be better in a year or two, after VW presumably has had time to iron out the reliability issues.

I own a Taos SE, and I’m happy as can be… gas consumption is low, and in Turbo it’s FAST, way less costly than a BMW X3.

This thing needs the 2.0T… the GOOD 250+ HP 2.0T not that trash in the Tiguan, for every trim level SE and above, with and without 4 motion.

Looks nice, but needs the 7 speed dual clutch transmission to help acceleration. The 7 speed needs to be standard on both fwd and awd models.

The AWD with the DSG has launch control and do the 0-60 in 6.5 seconds.

Sharp looking but needs a bit more power. With a full load, a rickshaw would be faster.
