2022 Volkswagen Taos | The Small SUV That Surprises

The Tiguan and Atlas now have a little brother. The 2022 Taos is a subcompact SUV though one that’s smartly packaged to maintain sizable interior proportions. Now, I’ve been running this little guy all over the place this week – through the mountains of New England, taking it on daytrips, etc. and it’s clear: VW has yet another winner in their growing SUV stable.

MSRP as-tested: $33,185

Steve I have said it before and I will say it again I am sure… I find your reviews to be concise and full of all the information needed. I appreciate you taking the time to give us such a good information.

I just bought a 2024 SE in FWD and I have to agree with you, it is so far a great vehicle, very peppy and handling is like a small sports car and the roomy interior is great I'm 6"3 and have all kinds of room. Great review.

Finally, a detailed review under 10 minutes! Thanks for the informative video; I love the styling of the Taos, but still thinking I will wait a year for VW to work out the fuel line/turbo lag issues.

Steve, Can’t thank you enough for another packed and professional review. You very well may have sold a Taos today.

Good review as usual, Steve. The best way to think about the Taos (imo) is as a basic Golf dressed up as an SUV to respond to that obsession among American consumers. If there is a single lesson VW has learned about Americans, it's that we like our VWs larger than our European counterparts. Thus, the Taos is among the largest subcompact SUVs. The Tiguan in the American market is the largest among compact SUVs and seen as a midsize or even a large SUV in Europe where it's called the "AllSpace" and the Atlas, like the Taos, is built solely for Americans and isn't even available in Europe where the Touareg continues to be sold. Personally, as a GTI owner, I'm sorry to see the basic Golf disappear from America but I'm sure the Taos will far surpass the weak sales of the Golf.

Update! I tried the launch control of the 7 speed DCT on the Taos it works like charm, can't belive they advertise this vehicles as a 8.4 second 0-60 when in reality it can do 6.9 secons using regulat 87 gas when using launch control

Thanks Steve. Happy Thanksgiving. Makes me miss the Alltrack and Passat 4mo wagons even more. There is nothing the Taos or tiguan can do that those wagons cannot. VW missed a great opportunity when they chose not to bring the Golf-R wagon to N. America

Never see any reviews regarding headlight output. Of All new trucks I was looking at the Ram had the best headlights out of the big 3. For new vehicles they are all fall short of having good night vision.

I wondered why Hyundai didn’t name another crossover the Taos. When you look at their lineup, only the Venue doesn’t have a city or area name in Hyundai’s crossover lineup (Kona, Tucson, Santa Cruz, Santa Fe, Palisade).

I love that color. Do you know what VW calls it?

Is that in between a T cross & T roc?

Pleasantly surprised with the attention to detail and value, particularly that upscale interior. Wish they'd do the same for Atlas/Cross Sport. Great video, Steve!
