My wife requested I build this bookcase/storage cabinet for our home. I modeled this after an original mid century modern Paul McCoy piece, but not all is as it seems.

Use paint that's invisible unless you use black light then you can have your skulls in flames and everything else and it would look badass

Wife was right. I'm always so amazed to see time consuming projects compressed into a 30 min video. It's really satisfying.

It's only a Paul McCobb piece if it comes from the Paul McCobb region of France

Wife was right.
This is an amazing piece of furniture but also art: those doors look like desert and mountains.
I’d live with this in perfect harmony.
Don’t stop waffling away on these vids. I talk
to myself all the
time and hearing
you waffle makes me feel okay.
Ps. Your daughter is so beautiful. X

Wife was right! Thank you so much. I'm a carver and usually use a dremel. I'm a carver.

Also. Have you tried to lay your wood on the CNC diagonally? Even a slight angle might avoid chip out.

The wife was right. This is an absolutely beautiful piece of furniture. I have taken somewhat of the same idea/model from Wayfair about a year ago and am still working on it. I would love a CNC but don't have the room for it in my 1 car garage/workshop. Watching you build the top portion with the concealed dados, really helped me decide how the top portion needs/would work best to be put together. I love watching your channel and the inspiration you give someone like me that learned to work with power tools before hand tools. Looking forward to the next build!

You ARE a woodworker. You figure out your own designs, program you CNC, figure out the whole process of building your absolutely beautiful furniture. Using modern tools to get it done more efficiently and more accurately doesn't disqualify anyone as a woodworker. It only raises the upper limit of what they can do. Those that say using modern tools means you're not a woodworker I would argue are not woodworkers themselves because they are first and foremost gatekeepers, and very unsuccessful ones at that. I'm trying to start a woodshop myself and I watch your videos to learn. You make amazing pieces, you show your mistakes and how you fix them. You never pretend to be perfect and don't claim to be better than anyone. You're not only a masterful woodworker, you're an amazing teacher too.

your comments about woodworking are spot-on. as a knitter, there's more drama about almost this same thing than you would expect. to me, there's a difference between "hand-made" and "hand-knit"; if you knit the thing on knitting needles, it's hand-knit; if you made the thing while operating a knitting machine, it's still hand-made. yes, one is quicker, but they're both intensive skills that require a lot of work from a human craftsperson. and they're both WORLDS different from anything made industrially. i feel like using a cnc isn't "cheating" the same way that using a knitting machine isn't cheating. it's your craft, it makes you happy, and at the end of the day YOU still made it.

edit: wife was right

I don’t necessarily think the use of Shaper and CNC is what bothers most YouTube watchers. I’m sure it’s that the content makers have to mention it every time… at least a couple times per video.
Like a, “Look, I know some of you hate this but deal with it. I have one.” Every time it’s used. Just use it. No, “Look what I’m using” announcement is necessary.
Although, those screaming about it is interaction, algorithm, etc… so, I get it… stoke that.

Purple Heart is by far my favorite wood. I also love it combined with walnut.

What if Paul McCobb's wife asked him to make something somewhat practical, functional, and elegant?

Your wife was right. I absolutely love the design, it is so unique. When is mine arriving?😉😁 However, I’m not totally sold on the black overall, but the pop of color contrast on the doors rock.

Wife was right. There is nothing boring about this project. It’s awesome. I might have to recreate your recreation from who knows who.

Wife was right. I wasn't convinced on the black stain when you first started it, but once it was finished along with those doors, it was beautiful. Great job!

The wife was right, this looks great! I think the black paint really pulls it all together and gives that sleek modern look she was looking for. Plus the little bit of Purple Heart is like a fun surprise when you open the drawer.
