Thanks for the video works like a charm recording audio/video of desktop. Note that with a lot of other software claiming it is free. A lot of them have 5 min limits per video. VLC is unlimited.

okay i imagine the wasapi is for your mic. what if you want to record the audio of the program you are screen recording... ie the desktop source audio too...

Can this be used to forward sound from a Hyper-V Linux guest to the Windows host? That would be useful since Hyper-V doesn't virtualize audio hardware.

This was somewhat complex and produced and unimpressive result. Audacity (free) is easier to set up and produces a superior quality recording.
1. Select Audio Setup > Host > Windows WASAPI. This adds options to Audio Setup.
2. Click Audio Setup > Recording Device, and select the same device that you use for listening (e.g. your headphones). Your device will be listed twice, so be sure to choose the option that has "(loopback)" after its name. You may see an option for Stereo Mix. You can select this if you prefer.
3. The process will record keyboard taps, mouse clicks, notification alerts, etc, so be sure there are no extraneous sounds that you do not want to record.
4. When you're ready, click the red Record button, and start the audio to record. When you're ready to end the recording, click the square Stop button.
5. Click File > Export, and select the format to save as. Name the file, choose the location to save, and click Save..

I have tried this a dozen times and all I ever get is a 1Kb size file that is blank. I don't even care about the audio part. I just want to record the screen and it never works. If I open the file with VLC it just flickers and locks up.

Daaayum ! That's pretty f'n brilliant. Can it make a single output file with video and audio already sync'd ?
If so, could you do another vid explainer ?

I have done it on older machines using audio patch chords. Newer machines make that harder so I wonder if audio out can be routed back in, bypassing the mic, internally. My other option is to try the audio out and back in with windows 10 but that would mean lots of conversions and chords.
Meanwhile, if my experiment works I'll update the comment.
