Million dollar teacher giving this stuff away for free... you’re awesome! Thank you 😊

I can’t express how much your theory videos have meant to me, Rick. I went to college for music theory and the instructors were condescending pricks. Looking back, I think they were all frustrated musicians who settled on teaching, and then took their frustration out on the students. I, like the rest of the students, went in excited to learn and have fun doing it. But the music program at that particular school had a 70% drop out rate. I dropped out after a year and a half and set the guitar down for the most part.

18 years later, in a state of depression, I found your channel and have been inspired to get back to playing and learning theory. Music has cured my depression, and I attribute much of that to you inspiring me. Thank you, sir. Keep up the amazing work.

Rick, When I first watched your channel I knew nothing about music theory. I studied your book, videos, and other resources. Now I can say, I GET IT. That is, I followed everything you presented here. Thank you! So much more to learn. Keep ‘em coming!

As a retired multi-instrumentalist, I can't thank you enough for your ceaseless and hugely informative efforts in fighting musical illiteracy.

Since I'm interested in starting my own YouTube channel for beginning guitarists, I've watched countless videos to see how other teachers go about it and I'm gobsmacked by what some of them are passing off as "instruction." A number of them perpetuate the myth that E#, B#, Fb, and Cb don't exist. Others misname the notes in even basic chords because they don't know what enharmonic equivalence is. One guy even said that whether you call a chord F# or Gb is "up to you" since they sound alike and depends on whether you're a happy, upbeat sort of person or are more serious and solemn. Un-freakin'-believable.

Again, a sincere thank you for all your hard work.

That modes part was the most straightforward explanation I've found. I've known the modes for a while, but not why, when, and how to apply them

What a great study piece. As a violin player in my youth and a bassist now this is the foundation of knowing your way around any instrument and reading music. Fantastic!

Finally after 22 years someone has taught it in away that shined some light in a very dark place for me musically. I suffered from learning disability all the way through school and the way it was chosen to be handled was to push me to the side and focus on the ones that did. They truly thought I was dump even after making me take an IQ test in fifth grade and got a 148 I was told as a kid you are not teachable. Thanks Rick I feel like next few months I’ll be thinking of music the way others have for years.

Rick I bought the book, full price tonight because at 55 years of age and playing guitar for 43 years this is the first time I understood any of this stuff at all! I’ll be watching a lot more of your videos and I signed up for the club.

I've heard all these Greek names for the modes since I was learning mountain dulcimer as a child, but they never clicked for me until just now, 40 years and 10 instruments later. Seeing the _geometry_ of the relationships between the half-steps really opened up my eyes.

I've always played by ear, but I'm trying to learn to compose and that takes a better understanding the modes and degrees. Thank you sincerely for your work here on YouTube.

I was fortunate enough to learn this in H.S. band class. B.E.A.D.G.C.F. That was good for 'bead' being a word then G.C.F. That gives what flats are written in the key Signature. The reverse is the order of sharps. There's too much to write here. Keep listening to Rick. He say it all eventually.

Thanks Rick! This was a perfect review/refresher of the basics that I needed right now since I’m picking the guitar again after a 25 year hiatus. So much to relearn, and this video was a huge help. I’ve got my copy of your book, and plan to print myself a hardcopy.

Anyone considering buying the Beato Book, now’s the time at 25% off. It’s a bargain! I did. No regrets.

If i had a teacher like you in college, I would've majored in music theory.

Rick if you’re still looking for future video ideas why not do what you’ve done for “Basic Music Theory” in the form of “Beginner Jazz Guitar/Piano” for Rock/Blues players who need a hand to get started in that direction...call it Jazz Basics 101...who knows maybe you’ll single handily bring this style back to the masses...Love Your Videos...Grateful For All the Insight...Thanks!

Brilliant, Rick! I NEED this stuff! You built on stuff that I know, and put stuff that I am unfamiliar with accessible and in a context. I bought The Beato Book today; because I need it, and in appreciation of your work in supporting and developing your (far flung) community. Thank you!

Super awesome - I am an adult learner, never had a stitch of music learning in my past, and things just lined up that I am in a good point of life to dive into this. Thanks for sharing info, but more importantly, enthusiasm - making it fun...I have been spending hours in front of my humble digital working some of these things out...

Props for the lengths you are going to, to make your more technical videos accessible for everyone. Great guy/teacher.

Please keep doing these “Everyone Should Know” (or just repost this or the other ones every so often). Not that I need to see another one, but when I was a new subscriber these videos were invaluable. I’d be lost instead of learning from your videos if I didn’t watch them first.

Great stuff as always, Rick! May I suggest a Practical Application of Music Theory for Beginners video, wherein you instruct us on writing a basic rock or country song (just one verse, one chorus, one solo and maybe a simple bridge, for example)? You pick a key for the song, then diagram the chords for that key. Then diagram the notes for the chords and show us how to capture those notes on the guitar in practice. Then pick a mode for a basic solo, diagram the notes for the solo and show us the best way to play those notes. Very basic for you, I know, but it would be worth volumes for me to see the theory that I'm trying so hard to learn put into practice by a professional. Many thanks for all you do!!

I've learned a lot from your videos. Took me years to understand the material here. My favorite thing about music is you can always improve if you put in effort.
