Today I’m revisiting the tried and true pentatonic minor scale but playing around with rhythmic displacement in a slightly different way.

When using syncopation in my riffs and licks, I tend to set up the riff starting on the downbeat before proceeding with the rhythmic displacement in the following measure.

In other words, I would start the riff on beat one of measure one, and then I would proceed to play the same riff, but starting on the “&” after beat one in measure two.

Today, I thought I would flip the switch and do the complete opposite. I would start the riff after beat one of measure one, and then in the following measure, (measure 2) I would repeat, said riff on the downbeat.

It’s a simple enough change, but that shift in perspective can lead to really cool rabbit holes to fall down.

To recap…

- This one uses notes from the E minor pentatonic scale 1 - b3 - 4 - 5 - b7

Some chords you could experiment playing this over would be E5, A5, G5, C5 and D5 or their triad equivalents in the key of G major/E minor

- As mentioned above, the tempo for this one resides in the neighborhood of 89 bpm.

Also, if you don’t know this scale, the intervals to learn it are all up on the board👆.

Understanding chords and scales is crucial to building melodies so let me know what YOU come up with from it..
