Slim Man Style Guide - What To Wear When You Are Skinny & Lean

Here are some tips from one slim man to another on how to dress well in order to look healthy and masculine.

General Guidelines:

1. Avoid wearing clothing that makes you look frail. Many thin men often try to disguise their frames by wearing clothing that's too large for them thinking that the extra fabric is going to make them look bigger, however, in reality, the opposite is actually true. At the same time, however, thin men should also stay clear of super skinny or skin-tight styles because these two are just going to draw attention to your thin frame. What's the solution then? Simply put you just have to find clothing that's going to fit you just right.

2. Wear colors and patterns that boost your visual heft. As a general rule, lighter colors like white, beige, or pastels are going to make you appear a little bit larger overall. Just as darker colors and the quintessential black are said to be slimming, the opposite effect is true for lighter clothing. Meanwhile, wearing patterns will create a sense of movement in your outfit and will also make you seem larger.

3. Wear multiple layers. With each additional layer you put on, you're going to be adding a bit more bulk. One layer on its own might not necessarily make a difference but if you're wearing multiple layers in conjunction, you'll be able to build up your frame a little bit more.

4. Find ways to make your neck look larger. Turtleneck sweaters are of course the classic choice to create this effect but you also do have other options. For example, you could have a zip neck, a stand collar, or a shawl collar on a sweater in particular. Also, simply wearing a dress shirt with a sturdy collar assisted further by the aid of collar stays is a good way to minimize the appearance of your neck because the pattern of the shirt will be carried upward a little bit by the verticality of the collar.

* T-shirts, polos, dress shirts, or any other type of shirt just like any garment in general for the slim man, should fit the body closely without being too tight.

* The jacket which is a garment specifically designed to make a man look stronger and give him a more ideal masculine silhouette. Suit jackets, sport coats, and blazers are all designed with the goal of accentuating the features of the male form making the man look more muscular. They achieve this in a variety of ways when it comes to the details of their styling. One way that a jacket does this is by broadening your shoulders.

* As we said toward the beginning of the video, slim men won't benefit from wearing pants that are much too baggy nor will they look good in super skinny cuts. Rather you should try to find something in the middle usually that will be labeled, fittingly enough, as slim.

* Depending on your own personal preference, a necktie with the width of about two and three-quarters to three and 1/2 inches is going to look good on a slim frame. Just remember that the overall width of your necktie should be relatively in sync with the width of your jacket's lapel so that everything is harmonious overall.

* Regarding shoes, go for something understated and on the slim side rather than something more utilitarian and chunky. Loafers are going to be a good bet for you as is anything from an Italian manufacturer as their styles are typically slimmer than some parts elsewhere around the world.

Preston is great. Good choice for a second face for the show. I'm not a slim man, but I watched this because I enjoy watching Preston.

Preston definitely did a good job with this video, and although it was a rather long video, he moved it along nicely. It didn't feel long. Good job.

I would love to see a video about the physicality challenged, disabled and dapper? I am dying to find things to help keep me dapper despite peripheral neuropathy, a cane and a service dog.

Great video! I'm 6'5" and 180lbs. Needless to say, finding clothes that fit is a challenge. I'm on perpetual scavenger hunt to find anything that even comes close. I couldn't agree more that a good relationship with a tailor is essential, as I need to have most of my clothes altered to fit. Made-to-measure is good for dress shirts and business-casual shirts, but casual shirts and sweaters are a different story. Sure, bespoke would be great, but...

I used to make the mistake of wearing clothes that were too big in order to look bigger, but with experience I've found that it's better to embrace my thinness and wear properly fitting clothes.

Good job Preston. This type of video is more in line with style fundamentals of modern American culture. I like the GG channel, but this type of content is more in alignment with modern mainstream style. I like Raphael's style, but his tastes are more on the fringe of what most men actually wear. Videos about things like fit and glasses are more of what I'm looking for in style videos, without the typical douchery of some of the other men's style channels. I'm finally subscribing in hope of more content like this.

Could you please do a video on jacket linings? The materials (cotton, viscose, polyester, acetate, and more), patterns, half lined, full lined, unlined, and the functionality of each. This is a subject about which there is little information available online, yet whenever I'm buying a jacket I get confused over deciding on the type of lining.

Also great video as always!

I'm sure these tips are very helpful for a skinny teenager like me. Possibly the one best thing a skinny guy can do is work out regularly since it increases size, strength and overall health

Preston, your getting better. Nailed it again!
Love the green and brown outfit. That tie is an amazing green color combination and be a way better website picture then current (the stripes and blue are distracting).
As a 6'-2, 170 pounds (on a diet to get from 33 waist to 32 again), with four inch drop inverted triangle body, enjoyed the presentation. Would say also having coats with waist suppression also can be a benefit as widens the shoulders. I now have coats from strait cut to very suppressed so can choose based on the affect and the environment/situation. Would have not been here if Rafael hadn't helped to reawaken my love of sartorial clothing and more important the most information on the topic.

What a flawless presentation! My tip to Slim Man or any Man (or a Lady) is to fully embrace your natural features. Other people see you the way you perceive yourself.
A fictional character on the American sitcom Frasier Dr. Niles Crane could be a great style role model to an elegant slim man.
Classic non-stretch/100% cotton slim straight mid-rise medium wash DENIM with with natural-looking fading in thigh and back and very subtle whiskering on a front pocket area could be a great pant alternative to the casual look presented in the video.

Another well done video. Thank you for sharing such great information.
My two favorite moments of subtle comic relief:
1) Any opportunity to show a picture of a pirate shirt
2) The phrase ‘a well-puffed pocket square’. Love that! Dandies the world over gasped with excitement.

Keep it coming!

I am 5'8" and 145 lbs and finding well fitting clothes off the rack has been a nightmare. Most shirts and suit jackets that fit my height do not fit my shoulders, and when I find something to fit my shoulders it is generally too baggy. And sleeves are always a few inches too long. This year I finally went made to measure out of sheer frustration. I agree a lot of guys will not afford this but for me it has been a relief and well invested money.

A tip I have and I use to look best and good as a slim man is to "Go monochromatic" . This will permit to the eyes to go up and down uninterrupted.

Your eyes are aligned with your glasses frame 90% of the time in this video. It really does make the person you're talking to focus on your eyes.
