1 Samuel 16: Why did God Send an EVIL SPIRIT on Saul?!

To recap the bible story of 1 Samuel chapter 16 a "spirit" from the Lord comes on David and and an "evil spirit" (or distressing spirit) comes upon on Saul. In this video I explore why that is and what the Old Testament means by evil spirits. Is it something natural we can see, or some sort of invisible power? In this video we look at Evil Spirits in 1 Samuel 16 1-13 and 14-23.

People want to know where is lucifer in the bible? And sometimes this evil spirit gets viewed as the Devil. But is that the case? Spirit language is tricky, we know phrases like "God does not give us a spirit of fear". But what does it mean when God sends an evil spirit on people like Saul? This video answers that question and more!

This is an explanation from Enduring Word "But the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and a distressing spirit from the LORD troubled him.

a. The Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul: In 1 Samuel 16:13, the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. As the Holy Spirit came upon David, a distressing spirit came to Saul and troubled him.

b. A distressing spirit from the LORD troubled him: If God is all-good, why did He send a distressing spirit upon Saul? There are two senses in which God may send something. He may send something in the active sense or He may send something in a passive sense. Actively, God never initiates or performs evil; He is the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning (James 1:17). Passively, God may withdraw the hand of His protection and therefore allow evil to come, without being the source of the evil itself.

i. This is indicated by what happened with Saul. First, the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul. This meant Saul lost his spiritual “protection” and covering. So, Satan was more than ready to send a distressing spirit to fill the void in Saul.

ii. This is why the continual presence of the Holy Spirit for all Christians is such a comfort. We don’t have to fear that God will take the Holy Spirit from us (Romans 8:9-11, 1 Corinthians 6:19-20).

c. From the LORD: Perhaps this was to judge Saul’s past wickedness and rebellion against the Holy Spirit’s guidance. This may be an example of God giving Saul over to his sin.

i. Saul clearly had the Spirit of the LORD upon him at one time (1 Samuel 10:10). As he was proud and rebellious against God, Saul resisted the Holy Spirit. He told the Holy Spirit “No” and “Go away” so many times that God finally gave Saul what he wanted. But Saul never realized the price to pay when the Spirit of the LORD departed from him. Saul thought he would be freer to do his thing without the Spirit of the LORD “bugging” him. He didn’t realize he would be in even more bondage to a distressing spirit that troubled him.

ii. Even in this state Saul could repent. He was not past the place of repentance and restoration. It was up to him to receive God’s correction and respond with a tender, repentant heart before the LORD.

d. A distressing spirit from the LORD troubled him: Today, Saul would probably be diagnosed as mentally ill. Yet his problem was spiritual in nature, not mental or psychological.

i. There are many people in mental hospitals today that are really suffering from spiritual problems. It is certainly wrong to assume that every case of mental distress is spiritual because chemical imbalances and physiological problems are also real in this fallen world. Even so, there are certainly some that need liberation from a distressing spirit and may never find it in our modern mental health system."

That is why music can cast out evil spirit in your house. Music songs that praise God, demons won't hear that because it insulted them.

The text does not say that “GOD sent an evil spirit to torment Saul”.

The text says,
“After the Spirit of the LORD had departed from Saul, a spirit of distress from the LORD began to torment him.”

Meaning (1) The capital “S” Spirit in the first half of the text is God. God left Saul. (2) The lower case “s” spirit in the second half of the text is not God.(3) This lower case “s” spirit that is sent “from” God is the opposite of having God.
When we don’t have God we have darkness. Romans 1:23-24; John 3:18.

I really enjoyed this lesson as it got me to really start thinking. The idea of spirit having to be balanced is a great idea was it mental health or was it spiritual or was it both? Great video.

Watching it a second time I find myself asking how can we as Christians apply the whole passage to us today? Asking the question about what the spirit was is for sure an interesting study (that got me searching my bible for instance Judges 9:23 same type of spirit? ) but what other questions does God want me asking from this passage? With New Testament light can we guard against evil spirits by walking in The Spirit?

that was definitely a good argument for some a mental or physical issue. I've not heard it explained that way. I'm definitely going to look into it.

I remember Job 1 verse 12 :

And the LORD said to Satan, "Behold, all that he has [is] in your power; only do not lay a hand on his [person]." So Satan went out from the presence of the LORD.

There God allowed Satan to lay his hand on Job for His own purpose.
It is not surprising that God also allowed Satan to harass Saul.

The NKJV says God sent Saul a "distressing spirit." Could this actually mean it was more so that Saul wasn't mentally stable in his state to rule Israel. It says God's Spirit left him after all. So what if that was the cause of the distressing spirit coming? This could have also set the stage for David to come in to become king. I think its important which translation we read that's closest to the Hebrew one to better understand the scriptures.

1 Samuel 28 Saul finds a witch who can cast a raise spirit spell. Because he can't get g0d to cast it for him. It's a good spirit according to Saul because it is recognised as Samuel. Pulled up out of the earth and not down from heaven. The eternal fiery torment dungeon hadn't been constructed yet. That passage makes no mention of Samuel returning and as “We live by the Spirit.” Galatians 5:25. "each person is destined to die once and after that comes judgement” (Hebrews 9:27) How did Samuel skip judgement?
