I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina. Today is March 22, 2020. Today is the 4th Sunday in Lent. Due to the Coronavirus outbreak, services at my church have been canceled for the next 2 Sundays. 1 Samuel 16:1-13 was to be our Old Testament Lesson of the Day.

A follow-up comment: On the portion that you did about shepherds, yes, they were looked down on in Biblical times. I think about the Christmas Gospel (Luke 2:1-20) when the angels appeared to the shepherds and told them about Jesus' birth. I'm sure that the last thing that Mary & Joseph expected to see were a bunch of dirty, smelly shepherds coming to see the Christ Child. But he gave the good news to the lowliest. Here in the CSRA, we'll soon once again be seeing those that get looked down on. And that is the migrant farm workers who come in and pick peaches. To me, they mirror the shepherds. Unkept, dirty, forced to live in cramped quarters, etc. Thankfully, a few years ago some churches formed a Migrant Ministries program. They went to the camps, grilled hamburgers and cooked other things for them, and basically made them feel welcome. Needless to say, they really appreciated it.

It's surprising how this pastor reads verse 12 as David was a" very picture of health " when the king James Bible CLEARY reads David was "RUDDY" which in hebrew the word means showing red or blood in the face, rosey, blush.
