There's more ethical foie gras where the geese are only fed acorns, but not force fed.

French try not to torture animals challenge: impossible

My mom raised geese growing up. The thing is. . . Most geese won't overeat even when given all the food they want. The thing they do to make geese overeat to produce the classic fatty liver is they damage the hypothalamus, so the goose doesn't know when it's full.

If a corporation doesn't do that, the goose will in no way way enough to make its liver fatty, thus requiring the tortuous force feeding multiple times (most of the time it's once an hour, at least that's what my friend said when she visited multiple fois gras farms around France) a day. It's inhuman. A rightous man cares for the needs of his animals; he doesn't torture them.

People really shouldn't support this idea or defend it. Though I guess people defend a bunch of stuff that's more or less horrible. It makes sense with free will.

Is it worth the price is not the question.. is it worth torturing animals for? Absolutely not, eating meat from animals raised humanely is one thing, this is just disgusting!!!

Its also a big animal cruelty issue. Qhy would you forcefeed animals for a pointless thing like that? Eat meat and be happy doing so, but dont be cruel to the animal just to slaughter it in the end.

For me it's definitely not worth it, either finanically or morally. I know a lot of meat we eat may well not come from well-treated animals, even with the best will in the world... But there's something I can't really get past about fois gras, when the process is literally torturing the animal. Slaughter is one thing but force feeding is another.

Also the price. Nah man you can eat far better for the cost. I've had fois gras maybe 3 times in my life and I wouldn't again tbh.

It's always "just because you can, doesn't mean you should".

There are thousands of other things to eat that don't make animals suffer and but you chose the one thing that does. Sure an animal has to die for a steak but atleast the cow isn't entirely abused.

Any animal deserves kindness if we can afford it. But honestly geese are sweet creatures. They have a social order that includes compassion, they have interests and desires, and they are clearly capable of emotional connection with each other and other living creatures, including us. Weve come a long way since we climbed down from the trees and discovered fire cooking. Lets keep that progress going in the right direction.

The practice should be banned, it's truly horrible

Truly unbelievable how little some people value life compared to taste

The difficult thing is that many fois gras producers treat their aninals far better than those reered produce cheap duck pate in supermarkets. Because its a high end product, they look afer the animals a lot more closely, and ensure they are healthy (as far as you can when youre intentially giving ducks fatty liver disease). Cheap duck or chicken liver pate often comes from very poor quality sources. Not that either are particularly ethical

Nothing can taste that good that it’s worth putting those animals through that

Happy to hear some countries have banned foie gras.

A friend in Europe and I were discussing grenouille. He commented that going through so much work for a small meal of frogs' legs is not worth the trouble. I agree. Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

I once had it recommended to me at a fancy french restaurant, but i just can't, maybe it was ethically sourced, but im not taking that chance.

Eaten at many many michelin star restaurants and never choose foie gras. As long as people keep eating it they will continue to do it.

Grew up in a farm where our geese are free to eat when they want to eat, and chase us kids when they want to bully us, we only eat geese on birthdays or new year but not yearly no, we name our geese.
The liver was small, the meat is tougher as less fat, but it’s tasty, the bones are great for broths, it was a pleasant meal to have

But compared to this one,
beautifully cooked and prepared
but hard to swallow knowing the things that the bird had to go through all its entire life and then just end up to get slaughtered, for a dish. 😅
