After doing some more research on the "Cooke Passage", I have found that although it is not a great circle, it definitely is the intersection of a sphere and a plane. This straight line/arc runs a few degrees parallel to a true great circle, crosses no land, and is indeed longer than the Pakistan/Russia line.
