You see a lot of people wearing Salomon's Quest series of walking boots out and about in the hills, particularly in Britain. So, what makes them so popular?

Newly updated from Spring 2021, Will's been out and about in the latest version, the Salomon Quest 4 GTX, to assess what this family of boots brings to the table.

I love watching these videos to see how wild Will's lockdown hair gets...

What makes them so popular? Well for me it was the fact that they got 5 tours in the desert in Iraq and the mountains of Afghanistan and worked incredibly well in both. Sturdy and rugged enough for 3-4 day missions where your carrying 80+ pounds of gear and light and nimble enough for the in and out door kicking in the urban warfare. They just work well and last great.

I bought my first pair Quest 4D over 4 years ago. I’ve worn them on countless hikes as well as weekend wear. A year ago I switched jobs a year ago and they became my daily wear. I’m former LEO and have worn many different boots. These are hands down my favorite and I just bought my second pair today.

It served me well from Everest base camp, to Kanchenjungha BC to Annapurna, to rain forests of Java and Sumatra. Stays totally waterproof for 30 days plus+ (I haven't tested its capability beyond that). Excellent grip in almost any terrain. Excellent toe guard, protects your foot like a feather in the rugged high mountain down trail. Ortholite is an excellent addition for flat footers (like me). Highly recommended.

I wear these for work boots as well as hiking. They are the perfect work boot if you dont stand in place all day or need saftey toes. They do feel very light for how much support they give. They are just better than any boot ive ever owned because the way i feel at the end of the day. Ive worn these 40hrs a week for 4 years and i cant imagine switching to something else

As with my other Salomoms these are so comfortable out of the box, apart from the crippling plastic piece that pushes into the outside of your foot, I found this a mile into a walk, it’s horrendous on rocky uneven ground as they transfer pressure from the sole into the side of your foot. I’ve had Salomon boots for twenty years and this is the first time I’ve experienced this in any footwear.

Best boots Ive bought. 8/14hours a day, 5 days a week. Kept my feet warm and dry on every occasion. And like you said they don't make your feet feel bashed up and the end of the day. Great boots for sure 👌

I think these boots are great for long distances on dry, technical trails. They are incredibly comfortable. But for winter walking in the UK, especially on places like Dartmoor or places in Wales, where it's boggy and wet all the time, the boots are almost useless at keeping your feet dry. I'd rather have dry feet with less comfort, which is why I eventually ditched the Salomon's and went for Meindl Bhutans (leather boots), which, whilst not the most comfortable, certainly work well at keeping your feet dry during hours of trekking through wet ground.

I agree with everything you've stated having thrashed a pair of 4D 3 GTX's in rough filthy terrain throughout this last winter . I rotate the use of the Salomons between a pair of Han Wag Tatra's + Zamberlan Vioz GTX Darwin's - all boots get similar wear and treatment . Unfortunately the Salomons build quality is already showing signs of fatigue and looking, at the present decline rate, like they'll not remain waterproof for another six months . All damage is occurring from bottom of tongue where on right boot the suede has already actually split to the sole, forward to toecap protection mouldings which on both boots the rubber/plastic has detached from the suede in multiple places that will inevitably join to create larger 'fault' areas etc. I do not use Hydrobloc or similar wax products on any Vortex lined boots as I ALWAYS blast them clean before allowing them days to dry off naturally in a cool dark hallway . Neither of the other 2 pairs are showing ANY sign of structural weakness . Prior to last year I've invariably bought one very good pair of boots £200+ once a year and worn them everyday until (usually) the soles wear through ; the Salomons wouldn't last 6 months if so treated . In short, if you're not doing more than 10-15miles a week in any conditions they'll, maybe, last a couple of years ; if you do more than 20 miles a week they'll prob not last a year . I love these boots so it is terribly disappointing to think to replace with a different make . They were £70 and £50 cheaper than other pairs, but, at £179 I had hoped for more .

I brought a pair of these in February but found them to be really bulky, I then brought a pair of Mammut Ducan Highs and they are amazing.

Thanks for the review. Haven’t worn them in a few years, but when it comes time to get new boots I will have them on my short list.

Good looking boots, but I hear far too many complaints about durability to ever buy a pair.

I just bougth a pair for my trip in Corsica next week. They seem to be confortable and very ankle supportive (I really need that). I hope they won’t disappoint me next week.

Thank you for the review. I'm thinking about buying these boots. I would use them in the summer, too. Do you think they would be too hot or heavy? Thank you.

Love how you make it sound like your own personal opinion when you talk about what these boots might be good for, but you've actually just used the blurb from the Salomon website. Verbatim. 🤣 This is why YouTube reviews are not reviews...they are sales pitches dressed up as reviews. Just be honest 🤷🏻‍♂️...great boot though 👍🏻

I've bought myself a pair, but I am getting pains on the outside of my foot from them. It seems like the plastic thingy that rises from the sole up towards the laces digs in to my foot, and since this is hard plastic, i doubt it will get better with break-in...
Just looking a the construction, I find it wierd that they have this hard thing sticking up, as potential presure-points are usually something you wish to avoid in a shoe or boot.

Just found your video, I thought at last a review the replicates my real world hiking in Ireland, after having major leaking in my 14 month old 500km Merrell MOAB's and resorting to plastic bags on my feet on a 50KM Road Bog more Bog bit of trail and then more Bog walk over two days I have had enough - will certainly check these out

3:23 Durability does not sell boots. Reviewers rarely have that type of long term perspective, as things move too fast nowadays. I think consumers can be much more attentive to sustainability than what they are. Even the top end leather boots nowadays include technology that really does not last more than five years, like the gore tex lining inside of the boot and the soft rubber of the vibram soles. Thanksfully, you can at least repair those, and, if you treat the leather nicely, a boot may last 10 years or more depending on how much you use them.
