Every country has visa agreements in place. For example, Americans get 6 months in Mexico or Canada. That's a big incentive to travel to our neighbors. I was invited to visit Delhi, India in the summer of 2012. The visa app was a little bit of work and a little bit of money. They issue a 6-month visa that starts from the day it is issued. So if you time your app well with your trip, you can be there a long time. I met backpackers there who loved having that 6 months (5.8) in a big country. Three months is also a long time to be traveling in a smaller country.

Concerning packing, I also have goofed with too much stuff when I was young, but was very happy with my packing for Japan's Jet Programme (2007-2010). In 2010, I returned with one massive suitcase and a box: did not mail anything home. I think they've lowered the weight limitations since then. Use cardboard boxes as the volume of these is much more than a thin suitcase. The airline will want to see packing straps on there put on by a machine. I did this at an airport once and at a post office once. The airline will crush your boxes but it doesn't matter with clothing, etc.
