$100,000 salary in 5 years! How I increased my accountant salary to six figures!

I started my accounting career in 2006 And by 2011 I was making over 100,000 and this video I will share with you how I did it.

This video is not only about salary progression but about the practical steps that you can take today in order to reach 100 K after five years of an accounting career. And if you stick around till the end I share with you a bullet point summary of what you need to do to achieve similar results.

First off I just want to say that I didn’t go to any fancy school. In fact I got my bachelors degree in accounting from the city University of New York Which cost me about $6000 a year in tuition.
I studied hard and kept my GPA above 3.5, which was a key factor in landing my first job at PriceWaterhouseCoopers.

I started my career at PwC in 2006 in the audit practice. my salary at the time was $50,000. I felt on top of the World to be making this kind of money and I want to work harder to make it even more.
I was working in the audit department so I was doing things like reviewing financial statements and tracing back account balances to Supporting documents. It was kind of boring but there were two things that were keeping me motivated: I was building a really good foundation in accounting and auditing Plus the glamour and the pride I felt working for a big four accounting firm kept me engaged.

After two years working in public accounting I gathered enough hours to qualify for a CPA license. CPA stands for certified public accountant, and in the United States it’s the gold standard for accounting knowledge I will prove to be a huge catalyst in my future earnings.

That’s amazing that you achieve that only after 5 years. I’ve been in the accounting field over 20 years and I’m a senior accountant. I do not have a CPA license. I’m applying for a promotion as an accounting supervisor and feeling so nervous.

I am a CPA and I make a little less than $500K a year on my own with no employees. It is possible. Here's the key in 3 words: "CULL THE HERD". If you know what that means you took can make almost half a million a year in CPA fees

Hi Bill-I really enjoy your videos and want to thank you so much for your helpful and honest insight. I am considering a complete career transition to accounting so I have a couple of questions for a potential career changer. I received a BA in psychology years ago and I am a bit further along in my career (42 years old). Several years ago I went back to school and took some introductory accounting courses and did really well (professors strongly encouraged me to do accounting) but I didn’t follow through at the time. Would you recommend getting a MSA or a second bachelors degree? Does it really matter since either way I would meet the requirements for the CPA exam in NC? At this age, would I even be considered at a Big 4 firm or would my age put me at a disadvantage in any way? Any advice is very much appreciated.

Great video, what approach should I take if I have a bachelor's in another degree, but I'm getting my masters in Accounting. Would you recommend a similar approach?

I can tell he more nerdy than me n if cpa exam was hard for him maybe harder for me...unless I'm much more better at taking exams than I give credit for. For example, the manager at my job gets 710 average points on shop rite's anoxify daily test taking n I am not even a year here n I score 1
Around 1100 average. If u saw us u would know he is more knowledgeable but not smart when taking the shop rite daily test...weird but he can't get higher than 800. N I'm steady in the top 3 of highest scores.

At this point in time, 100k would count as just getting by in most US cities :(

Your llife's progress sounds very compelling and interesting...alike to my thoughts about my future employment too once i finish my accounting/finance degree. One question I had was that how come you ended up earning more in a 'start-up software' company ($70 grand) compared to a big 4 firm like the pwc ($50 grand)?

Thanks for sharing your experience, Bill. I started my career in Global Workforce Mobility industry as a Global Compensation Coordinator and is about to take a new role as an accountant. I'm a CPA with Master degree in Accounting and Finance. I know my career journey is kind of awkward. Would you suggest to land a senior position in big 4, if possible, or regional accounting firm to hone my technical skills and earn a "Stamp of approval" on my resume for future career development? Thank you so much for your great advice.

Bro thanks for the info. I really appreciate it! Are you in your 20s or 30s? And will it have an impact if I do a CFA as well?
