After Mariana’s father unexpectedly passed away, she told us that she looked for ways to find joy in sadness, an idea based on the Portuguese word “saudade.” Her journey inspired this song and music video. Share so others can be inspired by Mariana too!

Earlier this year, we reached out to our fans, #UsTheFamily, asking you to share your true stories of love, loss, triumph, and hope. Of the hundreds of entries, we chose five stories to be transformed into songs for our new visual EP.

I lost my dad this year after a short battle with cancer. No matter how old you are, losing a parent leaves you lost and scared. This song beautifully captures the range of emotions that I go through daily. I viewed the videos about Mariana’s story on Monday, NEVER thinking I would utilize them today to help my middle school students cope with the tragic loss of a classmate. English is the second and/or third language of my students. “Saudade” helped them talk to each other about the loss. It also enabled them to find words of solace in their native language. OBRIGADO! My father passed away on October 23, 2015 from a heart surgery gone wrong. He sadly could not be saved but taught me to keep dreaming. Keep believing. Keep going. He loved me and my brother very much and this song made me so happy. It spoke words that I couldn't say. So thank you so much. This is a voice for people who have lost loved ones. Good job :)

Thank you for this song. I am experiencing this song from two simultaneous perspectives: that of the child who's lost a parent, and that of a parent who is well aware of his own mortality. Five years ago my parents died within months of each other. Two years later my biological mother died as well. So I am well acquainted with the grief of a child. At the same time, my children are growing up and I know one day they too will feel that grief when I'm gone. And the knowledge hurts. I want to tell them yes I'll be gone - and i will still be here. I cannot do anything about death and grief, but I can leave them all my love, all my affection, and my faith in them.
