Over compression is something you also seen the last 10-15 years in pop songs. As a rock musician I love it loud, but I love my dynamics even more.

And it’s a misconception that every instrument needs to be heard in its completion. Often timbres are there to provide texture to other timbres and often less is more. So poorly dialed in compressing could really kill some of that background texture and the dynamics that musicians played.
