Arguably the US's greatest contribution to the First World War was repatriation of the dead. We became quite skilled at it during our Civil War. Drew Gilpin Faust's "This Republic of Suffering" is all about how 19th century ideas about death influenced how we processed the previously unimaginable numbers of dead during that war.
