Bangladesh: Fear among Hindus as religious festival starts | DW Documentary

In Bangladesh, the minority Hindus are preparing for an important religious festival, Durga Puja. Mixed with the excitement is a fair amount of fear, because in 2021 attacks were carried out by fanatical Muslims.

The conflict was sparked by a video that appeared on social networks: it allegedly showed a Hindu placing a Quran on the leg of a statue of the monkey god Hanuman. To Muslims, that’s an act of blasphemy. As a result, Muslims protested violently in many communities, some vandalizing Hindu temples. In Bangladesh, Islam is the state religion, but freedom of religion is enshrined in the constitution. Nevertheless, anti-Hindu riots have been on the rise for several years, and human rights organizations estimate that several thousand people have been attacked. The fear among Hindus in Bangladesh is growing. A report by Zobaer Ahmed.

As a Bangladeshi Hindu let me tell you, a stray dog has more security than me in Bangladesh..If someone make a fake id of me and write something offensive about Islam, it'll take only few hours to burn my entire house or area.Not one single festival we can celebrate without facing temple burning or iconoclasm..Still i'll never left this country, bcz in Bhagavad Gita Krishna told to arjun, "You must preserve your land rights, even if you had to take weapon against own relatives".. I am a Bangladeshi Hindu and Cumilla is my hometown. I clearly remember how heartbroken I was last year, although I was far away from home. The Hindu neighbourhood DW broadcasted is where my home is. As a Hindu Bengali (India) I can feel the future of Bangladeshi Hindu population. From 22% in 1950 to 7% in 2022. In same rate it will be zero or less than one percent nearly in 2038. Many of them are eagerly waiting for establishments of Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in India. This one time vandalism of Comilla is not the actual crisis for them. They often get abused for idolatry and regularly get Dawat (invitation for conversion in Islam). That is the real pressure for them.
