As energy markets move to integrate more and more intermittent resources, Dr Gil is leading an international research consortia focused on improving the technology used in energy markets, in such areas as: providing a predictive weather service, creating a more responsive transmission grid, and stablising the use of renewable energy sources. In this address he provided listeners with an insight into the work undertaken by the SERI in its mission to create the utility of the future. This is the ninth lecture in the ESB Energy Lecture Series.

Dr Gil is the Director for Energy & Natural Resources at IBM Research, the Director of the SERI, New York, and a leading technologist and executive at IBM. As the Creator and Founding Director of the SERI, he is responsible for leading an international collaborative research consortia focused on advancing the utility of the future. As a Director at IBM Research, he has worldwide responsibilities for IBM's energy and natural resources research activities, leading a global team of scientists across 12 laboratories, focused on accelerating industry transformation through breakthrough science and the systematic application of the latest advances in information technology.
