Rolling in the Higgs (Adele Parody) | A Capella Science

---------------
There's a collider under Geneva
Reaching new energies that we've never achieved before
Finally we can see with this machine
A brand new data peak at 125 GeV
See how gluons and vector bosons fuse
Muons and gamma rays emerge from something new
There's a collider under Geneva
Making one particle that we've never seen before

The complex scalar
Elusive boson
Escaped detection by the LEP and Tevatron
The complex scalar
What is its purpose?
It's got me thinking

Chorus:
We could have had a model (Particle breakthrough, at the LHC)
Without a scalar field (5-sigma result, could it be the Higgs)
But symmetry requires no mass (Particle breakthrough, at the LHC)
So we break it, with the Higgs (5-sigma result, could it be the Higgs)

Baby I have a theory to be told
The standard model used to discover our quantum world
SU(3), U(1), SU(2)'s our gauge
Make a transform and the equations shouldn't change

The particles then must all be massless
Cause mass terms vary under gauge transformation
The one solution is spontaneous
Symmetry breaking

Roll your vacuum to minimum potential
Break your SU(2) down to massless modes
Into mass terms of gauge bosons they go
Fermions sink in like skiers into snow

Lyrics and arrangement by Tim Blais and A Capella Science
Original music by Adele

I'm not sure I like the term "nerd." I prefer to be labelled a "smart person who cares about stuff, " which is usually what people mean. But I accept your praise! :D

I'm a grandma, 60 years old, and I love this! I've been listening to acapellascience for quite a while, and I don't understand all of it, so I'm reading to learn. I have thought that if I ever sustain a severe conk on my noggin' and end up in a coma, I'd like to come out of it understanding string theory and quantum physics! Wouldn't that be awesome?!

As a physics teacher and a musician, I thank you for being able to fuse the two fields with an original, very-well orchestrated and executed idea. Please continue to enrich the world with your creativity

Thanks for the feedback... it's actually a real challenge to me to figure out what level I'm pushing for, because honestly I just write what first pops into my head so how complicated a song is tends to precisely mirror how well I know a subject. I suspect that your students will also not understand the next video (though I hope they'll still enjoy it) but after that I may have exhausted the subjects I'm an expert in. Maybe then things will be more at a "scientifically-minded enthusiast" level.

I have a sneaking suspicion that that kid is going to be awesome when he grows up.

Lyrics in the description. But yeah... in future I think I'll subtitle it. Thanks for stopping by! :)

I was trying to give a like on this, but unfortunately I already did before.
Why cant I give two likes when I enjoyed this two times?

That's amazing!! And don't worry, that was my supervisor's first question when I told him about this video: "Who's Adele?" xD

As a scientist and a music lover, Tim hits it out of the park on both accounts. Keep these gems coming! Love it!!

I'll bet Adele would really appreciate this actually. It's not an actual parody, but standing on the shoulders of her brilliance to show your own. Love it!

So I'm not the only one wanting to make physics parodies of pop songs!!!

Tim you did an amazing job on this video. I have viewed it at least 100 times myself and I have shared it on every physics forum and group I frequent! The entire concept of this video is quite brilliant.
This is especially impressive, given the fact that you created all of the sounds without digital editing or help from Mr. Autotuner.

Keep up the good work.

DUDE!! You are now my favorite Quantum Acappella group. You've invented a whole new genre of music.

I am a boomer grandmother (who cannot believe my age) and musician... so I don't really understand the science but I LOVE THIS STUFF from a musical standpoint and the awesomeness of the one man all part overlays. I do wish you had the lyrics to this one showing during the video so we can follow along with what you are saying. The more we listen, the more we pick up. But the musical ability is so so awesome and your renditions of the covers is more enjoyable than the originals....combined with the science knowledge so cool.

As much as I wish I did, I don't understand a thing. Nonetheless, these are highly entertaining.
