UN Security Council denounces Taliban restrictions of women's rights in Afghanistan

The UN Security Council has denounced the bans on women and girls getting education or working for humanitarian aid groups in Afghanistan and called for the equal participation of women.
The Taliban last week banned women in Afghanistan from attending universities and working for NGOs.
Girls have been banned from attending high school since March.
The council said the ban on women's education "represents an increasing erosion for the respect of human rights and fundamental freedoms."
It added a ban on female humanitarian workers "would have a significant impact for humanitarian operations in the country," including those of the UN.
