Cars are expensive, but they offer a lot of benefits and comfort. I prefer to spend 1 hour in bad traffic than 2 hours monkey jumping buses to get to my destiny.
Only way you can live without cars with no problems is in a very high density city paying thousands on rent anyway, and even there zoning makes people having to use cars to go to work.
I would say cars are like a tradeoffs of living in a very walkable place that don't require cars but rent is very expensive. I agree people should have options to live in walkable cities, but don't assume they are cheap by default. Another thing to consider is that People rely on vehicles even if they don't own one, though. Better own one than depending on other people's cars.

well just use a reliable eco car, it'll save you a lot in gas and preventative maintenance is very cheap as parts will be available everywhere.
