Russian President Vladimir Putin delivered a defiant televised address on June 26, 2023, saying he had deliberately allowed a 24-hour mutiny by the Wagner militia to go ahead as long as it did to avoid bloodshed. On the same day, Yevgeny Prigozhin, head of the Wagner Group, defended his short-lived mutiny in an audio statement. Prigozhin saying he had no plans to overthrow the government with the June 24 action that he abruptly called off before his troops reached Moscow.
