The Union Budget 2022-23 being presented in the backdrop of third wave of covid-19 definitely calls for a larger allocation and more emphasis on the healthcare sector. Historically, Indian budgets have paid little attention to the healthcare sector. Yet, after the covid outbreak, the healthcare outlay was increased 137% to 1.8% of GDP in the 2021 budget. However, this record allocation came for a period of over six years and included preventive factors, such as sanitation, clean drinking water, etc. As the world enters the third year of the pandemic, the healthcare sector has been widely calling for the allocation to the sector to be increased to at least 2.5%. But can the government's healthcare initiatives go beyond allocations? Will the long-ignored sector get the attention that it deserves? We discuss the India Development Debate with Viren Shetty, Executive Director and Group COO, Narayana Health, K. Sujatha Rao, Fmr Health Secy, GOI, and Suneeta Reddy, MD, Apollo Hospitals. Tune in!
