Grigor Dimitrov takes on Alexei Popyrin in Round 2 of the 2021 US Open

The 2021 US Open main draw runs from August 30 - September 12 in New York City at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. The tournament takes place for the 141st time and is the fourth and final Grand Slam of the year. Dominic Thiem is the men’s singles defending champion but has withdrawn following an injury. Naomi Osaka is the women’s singles defending champion and will be aiming to claim the title for the third time in four years. Meanwhile, No. 1 seed Novak Djokovic looks to complete the calendar Grand Slam after winning the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon already this year. Should the Serbian lift the title here for the fifth time, he will also overtake Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal to become the first-ever man to win 21 Grand Slam singles titles. With full capacity crowds back again, it’s time for the greatest return!

Being a Grigor fan is such a tortured existence. He's the opposite of clutch. He constantly dissapoints. And yet... I can't stop rooting for him. It's like Stockholm syndrome

Dimitrov really took the excitement out of Popyrin's win - surely he could've played two more games?

It’s always a pleasure watching Dimitrov play but…how is he still ranked 18 in the world? Has he made any kind of deep run in the last 2-3 years?

Grigor is probably gonna retire before Federer at this point

Dimitrov is always fun to watch but you can never expect anything from him or you'll just be disappointed.

dimitrov really most unclutch player of all time...you allways can count on him to loose serve if he serving for set or match and allways can count of him to loose every Tiebreak

Popyrin played really well. Let’s hope he continues on

Popyrin has a lot of potential and is often overlooked. Think he will make the top 20 next year

Grigor shouldn’t quit like that, bc that is unsportsmanlike and excused when he had no sign of injury. He didn’t give full credit to the winner. US open should deduct his paycheck.

Honestly Grigor didn’t look injured, it’s just like his mind gave away. He is extremely mentally weak. He chose some wrong shot selections particularly during the tiebreak. Looks like we will see the end of his career very soon. Sad to see that as he had some beautiful shots up his sleeves.

Hope Grigor gets well soon, always sad to see players not being able to play to the best of their abilities due to injury.
That said, if you’re 4-0 down in the deciding set, I feel like you could just stand there for two more games with minimal effort and properly finish the match, from the looks of it he didn’t seem to be too injured to walk, stand or hit a tennis ball, so I feel like he could’ve kept on playing for 5 more more minutes

He sure didn't look hurt. Looks like he just quit.

It’s tough to be a Dimitrov fan, he’s a great guy and player he just struggles with his consistency, when he’s on he won ATP World Finals but he hasn’t been on in a while. Still rooting for you Champ!

Grigor found the formula in 2017, and hasn't found that consistency since

Dimis gameplan once again surrounded by mystery.

Dimitrov will never take it to the next level by only slicing on backhand. Its a liability when the opponent knows more often not its a slice. When he does on occasion hit a non-slice backhand, it’s often times a weak shot unless he hits the sweetspot with the right timing (often not the case). He needs to work on backhand.

Look at medvedev and djokovic, they rarely use the slice unless it’s a dropshot.
