The Truth About Artificial Sweeteners and Sugar: Professor Tim Spector | Bitesize

Professor Tim Spector talks about current research into artificial sweeteners and reveals some surprising findings along with his own current views.

He reveals data from clinical trials which suggest there is no clear benefit for weight loss in swapping from a sugar drink to the diet drink equivalent.

Tim suspects these artificial sweeteners could also potentially be affecting our gut microbes.

He explains that adding unlimited amounts of chemical artificial sweeteners to replace sugar has to be thought through. He believes we should be weening people off ultra-sweetened products which could make them more likely to seek sugar.

What is disturbing is that a diet drink tastes sweeter than one with sugar so sweetness desire spirals.
Good talk

4:39 not everywhere! 500yrs ago safe drinking water wasn’t easy to get, and different cultures used different methods to make water safe to drink. Here in the UK and much of Northern Europe, low alcohol ‘small beer’ was made in order to sterilise water. Nowadays we wouldn’t call that safe for pregnant women in particular. In other places they boiled water to sterilise it, often in the form of tea. So I’m not sure drinking plain old water was ever the norm in the UK.

Tap water goes through old galvanised metal pipes, corroded copper pipes, modern plastic pipes, has fluoride and chlorine added to it. In some cases it might even go through lead pipes.

Carbonated sugary drinks are maybe the most pointless products on the planet. A triumph of marketing over common sense.

Hi Ranjan
Will you be discussing allulose and it’s impact of metabolic pathways. Recent studies have shown that allulose doesn’t spike insulin and in fact it aids weight loss. I hope you cover this.

My father and mother were born in 1942 abd 1943 and neither one of them will drink water unless it is their absolute only choice. My mother's addiction to sweets and drinking sweet beverages has made her life virtually unliveable. She has arthritis so bad that she can barely walk, which is very likely due to infected hips which are infected with the same bacteria that is infecting her teeth. My father has diabetes and either vascular dementia or alzheimer's coming on fast.

What about switching sugar to low GI crystallised coconut nectar to ween off sweeteners?

Depends on the product. Not all are made with chemicals.

I use a water filter the clay kind (gravity filter). Where I used to live, the city hall said we shouldn't drink their water bc they "can't" guarantee absence of poo in the water.

When I lived there I used to buy bottle water bc of it, where I live now, can just have a water filter

I think the best solution is to drink spring water & then just limit other drinks. - like 1 coffee per day or 1 sweet soda per day or per week. Just drinking water is not going to happen for most people.

Our cat will not drink tap water for the same reason.if water is put in a jug in the fridge, in less than 24 hours it has lost all its chlorine and the cat drinks it.

The answer is to wean the nation off sugar addiction and salt addiction. I don’t add salt to my food or when I’m cooking (despite what Jamie Oliver says) and I stopped putting sugar in my tea when I was a kid. I now only drink ‘sugar free’ soft drinks to keep my calories down. Of course trying to fight the sugar industry or the chocolate manufacturers is like trying to get cigarettes banned.

I actually test my personal blood glucose response to foods after watching "best diet for humans". This could be done easily at scale in research. I wonder if stevia is better. It is at least a natural plant. However it is too sweet for me really!
