Without verifiable international treaties, a ban on militarization of robots by Boston Dynamics or by the US government for that matter does not solve the problem. Regardless of the US stance, other countries will move on at full throttle in their research for the use of AI/robots for military applications. Basically, at this point, the genie is out of the bottle and placing restrictions on AI within our borders does not guarantees the same at the global scale.

The market will necessitate a pivot as competitors will arise that WILL do all the things they committed to not do. Which will mean they eventually will likely have to do things in spaces that they may not have wanted. Or be left behind.

I think Boston Dynamics is not the problem. The Goverment and the military will build up an robot army. They could buy a lot of the harmless robots and using it´s own software to make robot soldiers. The world is watching at Are 51, where the newest airplanes are build. But nobody watching Area 52, where the newest weapons are made. Greetings from Germany.

Robots and drones can be incorporated into the military (and already have been to an extent) without building an army of autonomous robot soldiers. To me, it seems obvious that the best thing to do would be to identify the aspects of warfare that cause the most casualties, and then design robots that can assist soldiers in those situations to reduce the number of casualties.

If you work in tech you work for the government creating mindless killing machines. I dont like seeing something learn and create it to be indestructible, cool technology but you get someone with a biased opinion on politics or religion or asshole politicians then release this against the opposition.
