Well, it isn't just acknowledging Jesus as Lord and Saviour, even demons believe in that sense but we're called to trust in in Jesus that it's His sacrifice that gets into Heaven, not anything we did. Those who will trust their righteousness like their going to church and reading the bible and giving to the poor and turning from sins and etc, they don't receive His gift, they want to earn it themselves and Christ says this is impossible with men but with God all things are possible. Christ's sacrifice means nothing to you if you don't trust it for your salvation and if you don't let Jesus pay for all your past and future sins then you will have to pay yourself and that's why you'll end up in hell if you keep on not receiving Christ's payment.
