If you couldn't pacstrap from your college WiFi, it's certainly because you weren't connected to its captive portal. The problem is that you couldn't get any response other than 404 from any mirror. This makes me believe that your requests got redirected to the website of your college (in order for you to login).

Creating a wifi hotspot bypass the captive portal because you're already connected to it on your raspberrypi. You could have connected directly on your ThinkPad by using a text based web browser like lynx.

Thank you for the documentation and the information on how you solved the issue installing Arch.

Welcome to the arch community! Also do enlighten your batchmates and dorm mates about arch and Linux in general, that's how I was introduced (by one of my wingmate) to this awesome world.

this video was put together so well, it's unbelievable. it actually reflects my experience very closely, i came from the mac and bought myself a T420 a while ago. installed manjaro (yes it's not really arch but whatever) and got nothing done in the beginning, but learning to find my way around bash, pacman etc was some of the most fun i ever had while "learning" an OS. Thanks for sharing!

Distrowatch is a total scam. It doesn't relfect the actual distro popularity at all, these statistics are just hits per day on *their* site. At the top is Ubuntu not mx-linux which is basically nonexistent in the linux community. If I had to speculate top 3 distros it would be 1.ubuntu 2. manjaro 3. pop. Steam hardware survey is the most reliable source available for this kind of data.

I've been looking at Linux laptops recently so this really helped, thank you.

The slow startup would be the hard drive (hdd), they get slow over time.
My thinkpad used to take 1min 40 sec to boot up but after i replaced the hdd with an ssd it only took 18 secs to boot

about 4 years ago i took a laptop i had laying around (non thinkpad) and just dabbled in arch and learned a lot about linux that way. ill probably need a laptop for school next year and i still have that one lying around but was considering a thinkpad cause of how durable they are.

At the time of this video, this ThinkPad was 10 years old. A new battery, SSD, and if you flash Libreboot open source firmware and you'll speed up the boot time considerably.
