The recent controversy about "anti-colonialist D&D" is stupid, it's also been blown out of proportion.

"Help, I'm being attacked by wolves!"
"No, you're being attacked by bandit wolves."

The village isn't under attack by zombies, it's under attack by HUNGRY zombies. Oh, wait...

People who are unable to tell the difference between fiction and reality have no business playing games of any kind, let alone be allowed to run a company.

Although the Forge of Foes has been out a while, it was recently added to D&D Beyond. That is why it is suddenly getting attention. WotC obviously supports this material, or it wouldn't have been put on there.

The page is from a book published in January 2024. It's a year old and so obsure that it's taken a year for anyone to notice.

These same people that talk about colonialism always give Arab and Islamic colonialism a pass which was arguably far more brutal.

It's funny, before all this discussion came up, I had an idea for a campaign where the players are commissioned by the ruler of one of Faerun's cities to sail accompany an expedition force to a newly discovered continent. There, they'll encounter many small tribes and budding civilizations of varying ethics, cultures, economies, etc., all of various races, most of them pretty homogenous and insular. Players would learn about what they're all about and decide how to deal with them based on the actions of the tribes, how open they are to diplomacy, or they can opt to sweep the new land clean and usher forth a new beginning untainted by the heathens infesting it. However they look at it, the choice is theirs. And some of the other tribes may respond positively to the utter annihilation of their rivals, perhaps becoming more open to trade and good relations with the town the PCs are helping build and prosper.

I feel like it would give a lot of players what they want: outright evil monsters to kill without remorse, nuanced monsters that aren't necessarily good but not intolerably evil either, an ever expanding town to watch grow, and if any characters kick the bucket, there's always new adventurers coming off the boat and rearing to see what this new world has to offer.

I get the feeling this campaign would make certain players go ballistic if they turn out to be that bleeding heart over issues they don't understand, yeah? Their loss, I suppose.

Their brains have melted. Rushing to defend the honor of Gnolls, of all things...

You know, an "anticolonial" game, where you play as primitives fighting against more technologically advanced invaders, might be interesting. It's definitely a dynamic that has many faces throughout history and fiction.

Imagine if these people found a carnivorous wasp nest in their house and the wasps were now attacking them if they tried to go near their own house. Would they think these barely sentient mindless stinging and eating machines had a right to not be interfered with even when taking everything from them? Do they expect to negotiate with these creatures to come to a common understanding?

Those Gnoll bandits are acting in accordance with their cultural values, Pundit. You're imposing your culture on them.

Good Gnolls??

"No goodness or compassion resides in the heart of a gnoll. Like a demon, it lacks anything resembling a conscience, and can't be taught or coerced to put aside its destructive tendencies."
Monster Manual, 2014

It's the Lazy DM, Sly Flourish, who put this crap out. It's not a shock because he's been onboard with the stupid woke cult crap for a while now. Including voicing his support of WOTC trashing the games creators.
