Lights without a DCC Decoder? - Unboxing and Product Review of Tangent's HO Scale BN Caboose!

How about a car that will run on DC or DCC, has controllable lights, and with no decoder required?

This new model train caboose from Tangent Scale Models is just that!

This caboose represents a car from Burlington Northern's final order of 50 cars built by International Car in Kenton, Ohio in 1972.

These cars were modernized in 1981. The most obvious visual differences that resulted from this rebuild were the elimination most of the side windows, and the removal of the roof walk.

The way this car is painted and detailed, it would be most appropriate for the 1980s through at least 2010.

As usual, Dan evaluates the model train's packaging, prototype accuracy, paint & detail, and how well it operates and conforms to applicable standards.

If you're a fan of cabooses, Burlington Northern, or just model trains in general be sure to check out this unboxing and product review!

Wow! This is the first caboose to receive a perfect score from this channel! Tangent did an outstanding job on this BN caboose! Even though it may be pricey.

Great review Dan ! You couldn't have said it any better about kitbashing. Many folks don't realize that even at minimum wage per hour, most custom models would exceed $500 just by detailing and painting, not including weathering. I've always had great experiences with Tangent. Truly amazing quality control and details. ONLY thing I would ask them to do is to silver tip the air hose. That's quite literally the only thing left to detail ! Haha

Tangent really nailed it spot on with this one, i’m really glad to see the coupler heights dead on as it seems like a lot of companies always get it wrong. Great review Dan! Can’t wait for the next one

I'm so glad you brought up building your own model vs buying the "ready to roll" model. Some people look at the price tag, and yes it is expensive, and complain about it, but by the time you got the materials, circuitry, lights, then add the man hours in assembling the model, you could easily double the price of what the Tangent model costs! I'm not saying building your own models is a bad idea and that people should take "the easy way out, nor am I saying "it should be the law that everyone builds every single model from the ground up, and if you don't you should be run out of the hobby", I'm just saying, if you don't have the time, workspace, or skills, to build your own, this is by far the better option. Me personally, I'm not worried about lights, sound, and details. Don't get me wrong, they're very cool models, but I'll always choose the lesser detailed models, they're far easier to handle, which far better on the blood pressure, lol! Anyway, sorry for the rambling comment, Dan, Tangent did a great job on this model!

I own too many Tangent cabooses - mostly Chessie and B&O - because I've always been a sucker for cabooses and the Tangent models are so well executed, as your review documents.

I have a BN caboose but the slightly earlier version with the red & green lights. I'm going to patch it, along with a Genesis BNSF-patched BN GP15, for my short line.

Your observation on the tradeoff of time for $ is at the center of so much of our efforts. I spend a lot of time weathering so I prefer not to spend more time fixing stock models like in the "good, old days."

Thanks for your review! They're always a pleasure to watch.

It's nice to see an expensive model get a perfect score for once.

Hey Dan. Course YOUR own caboose is awesome and the work you did on that Atlas model is making it a one of a kind model. I can't imagine all the time you spent on it to make it look that nice. Especially the side windows and cupola ! Congrats man ! Ten years old and still look sharp ! About Tangent model itself, well there's an end where handrails and stuff are slightly bended on the inside. But it's the only bad thing I have to say. I give it a 95% because of that. I won't complain on the retail price. With that level of details, it's hard to do so. From top to bottom, that caboose is a real masterpiece. Remarkable on every aspect. The holes left by removing the highest grabs is pretty neat and the overall higher weight of the model define what Tangent is all about : Perfection. Thanks again for sharing. You perfectly round up what that caboose is all about. Thanks to Nicole too helping you doing great and professional video jobs. Keep on your good work.
