Hi there! 👋 I'm Dayna, and love creating, collecting, and reading zines! Zines are self-published DIY publications, typically made using a copy machine. They can be about really anything, and are a great way to express yourself and find community. #zines #zinester #diy #craft #printing

In today's episode, I'll be sharing my Up-Down method for determining the pagination (page numbers) and collation (page order) of my zines. I find this method works great as both a tool for brainstorming and outlining, as well as a way to assemble your zine after it's been collaged or designed.

THE TOOLS AND TEMPLATES MENTIONED IN THIS VIDEO *:⋆°

catmothcrow is made possible thanks to textures from Freepik and Pixabay. Our show soundtrack is "Checkout 2 Now Open" from Mall Music Muzak - Mall of 1974 via the Internet Archive, "Soft Feeling" by Cheel from the Youtube Audio library, and "Waiting for the Bus in a Solar Storm" from Pixabay.

So much great advice!! Thank you for sharing! With my A5 (half-size?) zines, I fold the master copy a bit with the pages in the right order to see if I glued everything correctly but with A6 (quarter-size) zines on one sheet, it gets a bit more complicated so thank you for these tips! A tip for digital A5 / half-size pdf zines: if you use abode reader to print the zine, select "print as book" so the pages are printed automatically in the right order (first page next to last page, second-to-last-page next to second page etc).

THIS IS SO HELPFUL!! i’ve mostly stuck to mini zines, in part bc i’ve found printing multiple pages and on both sides hard to wrap my head around. my first zine was a larger half page but i remember that i kept printing it wrong, even with a template ;w; def saving this video for future reference 🙏

oh my GOD that's (up down method)
I just recently made my first non-mini-zine!! It's a half-size perzine walking through a metaphorical garden of my life story where all the sections are delineated by what name I was using at the time! I'm selling them on kofi to save up for a transmasc summer camp!!!
also, I just gotta say I love your zines, I can't wait to get my hands on some!

This video would've been VERY helpful a few months ago when I was trying to print a poetry collection of my fav author (her work's been on the public domain for decades, don't worry). I couldn't so I left the project on pause. After cracking my brain last week I finally came up with my own method for arranging the pages (it has 200 pages and I'll be making signatures, sewing them and bind them later).
Your process was helpful, though, now I want to make my own zines to gift to friends when we make art exchanges 🤭
