My tips as a self taught, intermediate sewist- Watch tutorials, even if you have no plans to make the item. You will learn things. And, even professionals make mistakes. They learned from those mistakes, knowing "ok, this isn't the right way to do the thing" and tried again until they got it right. This goes for any craft or skill.
