I removed the link to the Modrinth Discord at the request of some of its members, as the massive influx of people joining was causing chaos in the server

The newest virus thing most likely only struck Curseforge because it's bigger, however that doesn't excuse the rest

As a reminder, curse forge has been bought and sold by lots of people. It’s had a bumpy road and by this point it’s only mostly the people in it for the money running curse forge not the original people who care

I love when monopoly businesses reach their end. Why cant a business just be good and not ruin its self like this. Its really not hard to not squeeze every last penny out of people you are offering services to.

I still remember when Twitch bought out Curse. That stupid launcher straight up broke on my PC, refused to load any Minecraft instance ever. And when I went to the forums to report this obviously horrific issue?

"Tough, get a new PC lol."

They lost my support long ago.

Man, hearing all this after joining a modded Minecraft server using CurseForge is crazy.

This has been such a fascinating story to watch from a distance. I've been seeing a lot on twitter and such about this stuff.
Excellent job describing the issues and showing the full situation! Here's hoping this recent security problem will push Curseforge to make some changes.

My favourite CurseForge bug is that mods you can see on the webpage are not necessarily on the app. The "Falling Tree Mod" (mine a whole tree by breaking the lowest + faster leaf decay) for example. It just straight up, doesn't find it. Even when I click "open this mod in the app" on the webpage doesn't work...

I literally love modritnth for the simple fact that downloading anything is as straightforward as clicking the download button, on curseforge the download button is a launcher download and you have to click some smaller text off to the side to actually download what you want😭

One thing about Modrinth I really like is their maven api.
A developer can easily make a mod interact with other mods by simply adding a dependency from Modrinth directly, I don't have to download the mod/hope the mod has uploaded their mod to a specific maven repository.

Honestly, I hope modrinth gets more traction. I absolutely love the site.

Unlike CF, whose performance and ease of use in my experience has been terrible, I had no problem updating and editing my projects on modrinth.

Modrinth's design is sleek and easy on the eyes, while I still flashbang myself on CF.
For some reason, CF still uses their legacy site for alot of pages (sometimes I ask myself why they're calling it the legacy version if they're still using it).

CF always tries to push their launcher and makes me wait to start my download but modrinth just straight up lets me download what I want.

The only reason why I'm still using CF truth be told, is that CF projects get more visibility because of its bigger user base.

It's important to note that the api changes are fully at the will of mod developers. They can choose whether their mods can be downloaded through third party launchers.

5:06 - Expansion: LGPL allows you to redistribute the code from the project. That *doesn't* allow you to use their name or branding, which relates to fraud, trademark (possibly), and computer misuse law. It's a separate portion of the law which relates to completely different aspect of the project.

The key takeaway here is that competition is good. Whether people want to stick with CF or try something new, the fact that there are viable options will always be better than putting your eggs all in one basket. I'm still waiting for a serious competitor to Nexus. ModDB is something, but it has its own wealth of problems.

I thought this was gonna be about the fracturiser virus thing

Modrinth is nice, its extremely user friendly and offers a wide range of filters.

It also makes it clear what dependencies a mod needs and whether its loaded on forge, fabric or both

i hate to sound rude but could have possibly mentioned the new virus called "Fractureiser" or at least put it in the description so people know not to download mods for a while

glad to see modrinth getting this much attention, loved it's open source first approach since the start
