I'm part Trini but grew up in the States. The first time I went to Trinidad and Tobago and heard "Good night" as a greeting, I was thrown off lol. The only place in the US I've heard "good night" as a greeting is in New Orleans. It's common to come across a Black New Orleanian and they greet you like that. I'm glad I had already been initiated so I wouldn't look at them crazy for saying it lol

In Jamaica we say the greeting as well especially if there are older people and if you don't u probably pick up a lick from your parents and them say you have no manners. As a child and even now I never walk into a room and not saying morning evening or night to the ppl in the room.

This goes for all of the Caribbean. The time of day is both a greeting and a goodbye. I've never seen bags of water hung at the door. We have a few traditions about sprinkling water in the morning
