When I stopped buying alcohol every week we saved soooo much money. I was a bad alcoholic just 3 months ago but have been sober since and have probably saved around $600+ at this point.

I adore the idea of minimalism, and I'm really trying to embrace it, little by little. But there is one thing I will always buy: books. I love them truly. The smell, the texture... I go to the library too, but it is never the same for me. I re-read them all the time and I mark the pages for later. I just love them. I think I will always allow myself that little thing because I keep loving books and finding them full of purpose.

I think a cool minimalism video idea would be to talk about the good and bad purchases you’ve made as a minimalist! Like you always say, it’s a journey. And even when you’ve made a lot of progress as a minimalism, we’re still humans, and sometimes we make a decision that we think will work out, but doesn’t. I know I still make “bad” purchases as a minimalist! But I do learn from them. Like realizing that gold jewelry catches my eye, but I just don’t wear it. I prefer to actually wear silver.

Less is so much more. I traveled around Asia with a small back pack and from then I realised I didn’t need anything.

I learned this from the Youtube channel The Financial Diet, but something that's really helping me to stop spending on unnecessary things is to write a wish list. Every time I think "Oh, I want that/could use that right now" I'll write it down, and if I've written down the same thing 5 times in a year, I allow myself to buy it. This really helps me to realise what I do and don't actually need! My achilles heel is dog stuff though, I still buy my dog way too many things XD

So glad the 25ish on up are doing more minimalism. I'm 65 and raise on a farm in Missouri. We couldn't afford all these extra things. Today's lifestyle is to consume.

Ironically, becoming a “minimalist” in 2016 made me become MORE materialistic, but in a good way!! For me it’s not so much what I stopped buying but what I started buying. When you consciously limit your number of possessions, each and every item counts. You start to care way more about things like quality and longevity. This led me to invest in top quality basics (read high quality denim, sturdy outerwear and well made footwear). These things are VERY expensive and I found that once I’d invested in them, I was too skint to splurge on anything else 😂😂😂.

I've thought about doing a "no buy" for the rest of the year, except Christmas gifts and whatnot. So, print out a blank calender with days, and color in all the days on which I didn't buy anything unnecessary with green, and then if buying anything that isn't budget related like food, toilet paper, whatnot, color it in with red. And writing on it what I bought then. I think, instead of saying that you "limit" yourself, if you make it a challenge, it's mentally more appealing. So it's like "yes, I managed not to buy anything" instead of "shuck, I'm not supposed to buy anything".

I stop my souvenir temptation but buying a postcard or two instead! Satisfies me and they’re cheap and don’t take up a lot of room

As a guy who's used double edged safety razors ever since I first started shaving, let me tell you - they are *AMAZING*
They are super safe (hence the name) and retain sharpness for a long time. I recommend Feather blades from Japan. From my experience they are the sharpest and therefore safest to use (no tugging) Feathers come packaged in a little bit of plastic, but the great thing about them is that the packaging also serves as a blade bank to safely dispose of used blades. You simply retrieve a new blade from the top and slide the old blade in the bottom. Super convenient.

Vinegar is an excellent fabric softer. I use it in the washing maschine. Helps keep the fabrics and colors fresh. The smell fades when the clothes are dry.

my weakness is books. I love reading and i love owning my own books and so this is where most of my money goes to. I've been trying to always buy second hand versions of the book i want but often it's difficult for me to find them...otherwise i feel like everything else on this list i can/already do

You inspired me to clean out my wardrobe. I got rid of 6 really big bags of clothes and shoes that I donated and now I'm planning on only buying things that I really need and that are sustainable. I even got a list on my phone of things that I actually do need and brands that are actually good for the environement. So thank you!

I had heaps of stuff as a kid but at the age of 11, something switched in my mind and I gave up all my old toys and most of my stuff, including clothes and furniture and my room ended up with very few things, like a minimalist room(I had no idea what that was at the time) because I realised most of the stuff meant nothing to me. I loved my room from then

Before buying new things I ask around my friends, co-workes and family. You will be surprised how much stuff people hoard in their basements. This way I got a toaster, a bed and a brand new Jack Wolfskin wintercoat for 50 € last month. Most people are glad to get rid of this stuff before selling it to strangers. I always wonder why they buy high end electronics and kitchen gear only to put it aside...
