He Compares Forced Labor in Prison to Slavery

Dr. Phil discusses forced labor in prisons: should it end because it is punitive -- and even abusive -- or should it be seen as a productive way for some prisoners to spend their days and invest in their future? Jorge Renaud, director of Latino Justice, and Demico Boothe, author of “Why Are There So Many Black Men In Prison?”discuss their experiences of being forced to work in the prison system. Tiheba Bain, founder of Women Against Mass Incarceration, says while she acquired certain skills in prison, prison labor is indentured servitude. In America, forced labor in the prison system is legal under Federal law, however, Bianca Tylek, founder and director of the non-profit advocacy organization Worth Rises, discusses why she believes it is wrong. A friend became a CO at a private prison, was harassed by other employees when he tried to encourage prisoners, to do better, be better, someone overheard him say that he identified with a prisoner, saying he could have ended up on the wrong side himself
There's a huge emphasis on demoralization

I think they should teach prisoners technical skills and then if they get out they have to give a percentage of their salary for a few years back to the prison. It wouldnt be fair to get free training.

If you can’t do the time, don’t do the crime.

You’re literally in prison to pay your debt to society, meaning you have harmed society and impacted it in a negative way. Working to repay your debt to society isn’t slavery. It’s called paying your dues.

If you don’t want to do force labor stay out of jail really simple if you think about it

You should add Larry Lawton to the discussion of prison. He’s been through it.

😂😂😂 How about they pay you min. wage and you pay rent, electric, gas, water, sewage, trash, food, medical, and clothing. I think that's a better fit. You definitely won't have 50$ a month! 😂

Is it supposed to be a fun get away or something? No it’s supposed to be a punishment and make you miserable so you don’t want to go back. Obviously it’s not bad enough since people are still repeating offenders

No one is supposed to like prison, that's why you only go there when you commit a crime. If you don't like it don't do crime.

Nobody forces you to sell crack. How many ppl OD’d off of him being too lazy to get a job? How many families did he ruin? Nobody owes you a damn college education. You owe the world.

State Universities like University of Maryland, Virginia State, George Mason, and schools all over the country use prison labor to build their furniture every year...

Criminals need to take accountability and learn that there will be repercussions for being an asshat

"None of that profit is going to the inmate! They're making less than $50 a month."

Yeah and food, clothing, and shelter. And that's in return for them going into a liquor store and shoving a gun in some kids face, threatening to blow his brains out if he doesn't hand over everything he has.

Spare me the tears. If I don't work I don't eat. Why exactly should criminals sleep and eat free?

It's not my job to get you to stop being a criminal. That's your responsibility. If it's so horrible you'd think you'd try to stay out but you just come right back. Whose fault is that?
