Volumio 3 music player for the Raspberry Pi updated

Right from the start I followed Volumio, the free software player for the Raspberry Pi. It’s not the only player for the Pi, but for me it worked better than others at that time. Since it is impossible to keep track of all players, I kept on checking out Volumio. And now there is version 3.

Very happy festive season to you & yours Hans!!!

Changed to MoOde due to the pay wall of Volumio 3. Volumio is easier for first time users, but having everything available without paying makes MoOde better to test out the features before dropping money.

Thank you Hans, neat to see the Pi with screen - looks interesting! Volumio3... was hoping they would have landed AmazonMusic - but apparently not. Will be sticking with BluOS hardware and UI until they do, but it's still on my radar.

The Pi4 with Volumio3 is unable handle a collection of 2000 ripped CD's. It is simply too slow and keeps freezing. Neither direct from USB SSD nor network drive. DNLA rendering from Sony Media go also ending with hang-ups. The Volumio menu lacks simple tasks like sorting on track. You can only play one track at a time, then it stops. Changed over to PiCore and play my music from PC with Squeezebox Server. Now it responds well and to my surprise the sound is much, much better than with Volumio. Will Volumio perform better if I pay for it or am I doing something wrong?

Their e-mail support is not enjoyable. When there's an issue or question they ask you to contact the manufacturer, even though it's a software problem. Then it's back and forth☹️

I think the price for the lowest tier of Volumio is very reasonable given that you get updates for new features and also tech support included. People cannot work for free especially in a niche market without commercial advertising. 1000plus on speakers and amp, 20 Euro per year is nothing.

Thank you, sir. I am looking for an alternative to the PiCore LMS system, which is great when it works, and otherwise somewhat frustrating. Perhaps Volumio will be easier to use. (Your videos are clear and engaging. Nice work.)

Hi Hans. I´ve seen a few days ago, here on YouTube, a review of the "old" Logitech Squeezebox Touch, can you get to manage one and make a review if it's worth nowadays? Thanks 😉

Can I use Raspberry Pi to charge dacs such as E50Topping? The chain would be IFI I POWER that is a Linear power supply to the Pi4 and then power and data to topping E50 with just one power supply

Hi! I tried Volumio and for me it is better than Wiim mini. But slower even connecting Ethernet. I don’t know how to get full decoding of mqa even using full decoder E50 by topping even with plugin activated Another Question, the Pi gets a bit hot. What do you do with that?

Luckily I put the new version on another SD card to check it rather then overwriting my daily use card. The plugins, including previously free ones I use like the Paradise Radio FLAC one, are now behind the paywall. I will stick with the version 2 as long as it still is supported. The cynical side of me expects them to withdraw support and force us freeloaders off Volumio. I will check out Moode again but last time I did it did not support the FLAC streams from Paradise Radio. Dag nam it!

I like to own what I use and don't like subscription services, which are obviously designed to maintain a cash revenue for the providers.

Hallo Hans,

De Yulong DA10 hangt sinds vandaag aan een raspberry pi 4 met Volumio 3 😉

Interesting to see, I tried it and couldn't get it to set a static IP address which I currently have set on V2 and as I'm not a premium user there doesn't seem to be any reason to upgrade.

Can I use an USB record player with Volumio? And if so what are the settings? Thanks John
