Scrovegni Chapel - One of the Greatest Artworks on Earth

Everyone has heard of the Sistine Chapel and Michelangelo, but have you heard of the Scrovegni Chapel and its ceiling painted by Giotto? Art historians rate it as one of the most important artworks in the history of mankind.

It is one of the most beautiful and moving sights I have ever seen.

I had the immense pleasure to visit this incredible place a couple of years ago. We were caught is very heavy rain from the station on the way there but it was worth the discomfort. I photograph everything when I am in Italy but I was unable to do anything for a while when we entered, just stand there in stunned admiration. The great thing about this, on a practical visitor level, is that only 25 at a time are permitted for a 20 minute session. Photography is permitted, without flash or tripod (who takes a TRIPOD on vacation???) but you need to pre-book visits and, if you miss your time slot you will need to book again. I have seen photos of the ridiculous crowds in the Sistine and that isn't for me - too much like a cattle market for my taste. I guess that the Scrovegni must be one of the most under-rated and under-visited works of art by foreign visitors.
