Center for Theory of Quantum Matter: Connecting Through A Common Language

The Center for Theory of Quantum Matter (CTQM) is a newly created center within the Physics Department at the University of Colorado Boulder (CU). CTQM was founded in 2014 and conducts theoretical physics research focused on macroscopic quantum matter, ranging from electrons in solids to quark-gluon plasmas, to trapped ultra-cold atoms, to systems engineered to process quantum information, and even to black holes.
The topic of quantum matter is a focal one that transcends traditional discipline boundaries, and CTQM brings together theoretical physicists working in five different sub-fields (atomic, molecular and optical (AMO) physics; condensed matter physics; high-energy physics; nuclear physics; and quantum information science). While Center members come from different sub-fields, work at CU, JILA or the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), and have different backgrounds, the similarities among the problems they study are more fundamental than the differences. The Center is a vibrant, dynamic and welcoming community where students, postdocs and faculty carry out research at the frontiers of theoretical quantum matter. Center members exchange ideas and collaborate across traditional discipline boundaries to advance the frontiers of our understanding of quantum matter.
