We've been a great ally. Bibi doesn't get to interfere in US politics and is overplaying his hand. Israel has had no greater ally than the US and Bibi is taking advantage of that. Israel absolutely had the right to defend itself. That said, they also have the technology and military capabilities to have handled this attack better than they did. Netanyahu's "retaliation" was not just to attack Hamas but to attack all citizens.
