Kossars are hybrid units, just like almost every other Kislev unit. They lose against units that specialize on ranged or melee attacks, but at the same time they are universal so they can adapt to the ever-changing reality of battlefield better than specialied units.

I think if you sent the kossars into melee they'd win

i wish units in this game could have a togglable Volley fire button, hate to see those uncoordinated firing patterns on High elf archers.

Being a hybrid, I'd have just charged the kossars in to engage the archer in melee.
