Fuji Velvia

Fuji Velvia is simultaneously gorgeous and frustrating. Anyone who shoots film owes it to themselves to buy a roll and shoot some photos. There's truly nothing like it.

My solution: I would try to compensate this pretty warm cast with an 80 a or b Filter! Will certainly not be perfect and you'll lose another 1 or 2/3 of a stop, but my goal would be to try to decrease the color temperature of the light here...

Great video. I dig what you're doing here. It's always nice to see other film folks out there.

S chart sweet spot is +3 push 50 to iso 400. 2 second hold, without a reciprocity number.

I love this style of video on explaining Kodak Ektar and Fuji Velvia! I like hearing how to use each film to its best ability

Thanks for the video! I remember the Adirondacks while I studied in Boston in the late 1980's a friend of mine took us there and your Velvia shot of the lake reminds me of the mood I experienced while I was there, breathing cold air!

The other shots from your friend are from a master of the medium. He exploits the narrow dynamic range of the format. I have been a fan of Ektachrome VS but I have bought Velvia 50 for my 35 mm camera. I will do so for my Mamiya C220 indeed!

This was such a sweet Vid. Thanks eric. I learnt a ton. Really appreciated the extent to which you went to find a range of image examples. Keep up the good work.

Great job with the video Erik! You did a great job covering all the ins-and-outs of Velvia, and how to get the most out of it. Though Velvia can go wild in high contrast scenes, I find it to be very faithful when shooting in low contrast scenes -- which is mostly where I use it. I have some velvia sunrise/sunset shots, but over time I tend away from those and more toward the subtle scenes for velvia. On my upcoming trip to Death Valley, I bought some Provia to use for some of the high contrast scenes when I don't feel like scanning Ektar. We'll see how that goes.

Good video Erik. I had to laugh when you said you don't recommend using Velvia without a tripod. Last year I shot maybe 18 rolls of 50 & 100 on 35mm and did not get out my tripod once. I used a bunch of Velvia shooting sunset and low light (100 Velvia not 50) with my Olympus OM2n camera last summer. I was using a 50mm f1.8 lens. In that group are some of my favorite landscape shots of last year. Last summer I was also carrying an iPhone 6S and took back up shots with it. The Velvia colors right from the untouched scans were fantastic. The iPhone shots were similar but with much less color. My only concession on using Velvia 50 or 100 is that I don't use my very old Voightlander Prominent with the slow shutter with it. But I do shoot Ektar 100 with the Voigt with no problem.

Cool video! Watching this in the Newark airport, which is a horrible place

The color cast that you talk about can be corrected with CC filters. Which is how commercial photographers dealt with these issues in the "film days."

Erik it really is an amazing film! It takes quite a while to get the hang of, but once it clicks you can achieve some very predictsbler results.

I agree that Velvia is great, but can be tricky as you say. I got some great pictures when I was high up in the White Mountains taking pictures of the ancient bristlecone pines. In that case Provia became too blue (the light was intense and the sky was very blue), but Velvia 50 nailed it.

interesting video, thanks. I'm wondering if the modes on digital SLRs are an attempt to emulate film types?

Hi! Wow! Got my X-T3 and have been messing with the film simulations. Everyone says ooooh wow Eterna but I keep coming back to the Velvia Sim. And so I started researching what the heck the actual historical nature of the film was so I can do it justice. This film review reveals why I like it most of the time and hate it other times. Right on man. Do some simulation versus film reviews to bring in the digital guys??
