My family use to shoot everything on slide film, We have hundreds if not thousands of slides. Most of the slides date from the early 1960s through the late 80s. I am experimenting with film again and have always loved slide film. The amazing thing with slides is the presentations, the setting up of the noisy projector, the clunky screen, the focus of the watchers on the image on said screen and the shared experience of seeing the past. Very powerful and at times emotional. I hope slide film never dies. Thanks for covering this subject.

100% agree on cross-processing. It's one of those things that falls into the category of "just because you can doesn't mean you should."

Here's why Velvia is so sharp. Look at the MTF Curve graph on the datasheet at 5:01. The film provides greater than 100% response from 5 to 15 cycles/mm. That's not a misprint. What this means is that the film intrinsically highlight edges. The film effectively does an unsharp mask sharpening on itself.

Look for the datasheet for Kodak Gold. It exhibits the same characteristic. However, Gold actually resolves significantly more detail than Velvia; look at where MTF30 terminates for both films. MTF30 is the traditional resolution extermination threshold. Nothing much below this is visible.

With practically only five stops of dynamic range, specific tendency to amplify saturation to 11, it's a special situations film. On the few occasions I had this in the film back, it literally took three months to finish off a roll.

Always noticed “color negative” and “color reversible” but never knew the actual depth and difference behind both. I’ve always seen Velvia at so many shops and as a Fuji lover never tried it, that changed today man! thanks Analog!

I hope Film Ferrania will eventually pick up the color slide slack.

I love velvia 50 so much… this is the go to film for my landscape. Looking at slide film in person on the light table is so amazing!,

I shot Velvia 50 for the first time last week. I find it to be a very intense and harsh film with high contrast and deep shadows and highlights. I was shhoting beaches and the sea and got very good looking overly saturated results. Now that you mentioned velvia 100 is more neutral, I might go with that. Since I live in Turkey, it’s very easy for me to get Fuji stuff for cheap. Right now, the cheapest film in Turkey is fresh Pro 400H.

I love Slide film - I’ve technically tried both Ektachrome and Provia, though haven’t developed Provia yet. Ektachrome looks beautiful in the day AND at night with it’s 10 seconds before reciprocity kicks in. Shoot slide film; even if rarely!

I just shot a roll of 2025 exp. Velvia 100 I snagged while in Japan, and wow. I didn't know 35mm could resolve so much detail. It definitely out resolved my lens, and I think it out resolves The Darkroom's super scans. If only I could buy more.

Noah, thank you for what you do. Because of a combination of Ben Fraternale of In an Instant and ofc you I decided to get into my first polaroid format, pack film, so I did. I had some issues...the dark tab ripped so my dad and I had to pull it out and load the pack in darkness which we have no experience doing. The first two shots came out fully black. After talking to a photographer about it online, I realized it needed a particular battery so I ordered one. Shot two shots today at my soon to be college and they came out really beautiful, super cool experience that I'm very thankful to y'all for.

I literally just received a roll of 120 Velvia 50 that I plan to shoot soon. I've shot a lot of Velvia in the past, but this will be my first time shooting Velvia 120.

Just got a 6x6 Rollei slide projector up and running, medium format slides projected are really something special. Great review Noah!
