A volcano has erupted in south-west Iceland near the fishing town of Grindavik, which has been evacuated.

The eruption started at about 03:00 GMT on Sunday. Iceland's public broadcaster RUV says it is not clear which direction the lava is flowing.

"A crack has opened up on both sides of the dikes that have begun to be built north of Grindavik," the country's met office said.

Grindavik was evacuated in November after another eruption, but residents had been allowed home for periods of time.

You can't shut the earth's mouth when it decides to talk!
Really incredible sight!

I've been to Iceland many times over the years and found the country and her people to be the best in the world. I use to go to the Fish House in Grindavik every visit. If I could become a citizen and talk my wife into moving there, I would. Prayers for the residents of Grindavik and all the people of Iceland.

Fire fountains are both terrifying and beautiful. The only thing that ultimately matters is that nobody is harmed. Though losing one's possessions is extremely traumatic, it's better than losing one's life or loved ones.

I hope everyone stays safe and with luck, gets to go home before too long.

The man who fell in the crevice three/four days ago was never found. Seems he was working near it and its side collapsed and he fell in. It went all the way down to the ground water, so it's thought he was carried away by the underground water. I guess he's the only death.

I've been looking up volcano videos over the past week, given the tsunamis, tornados, intense flooding etc... It's a bit eerie to see this now!

As An Icelandic Person, We Are Both Amazed And Terrified.
This Means We May Lose Grindavík As A Whole.

We Will Stay Strong Together. ❤

I hope and pray everyone was able to pack up all of their precious possessions before evacuation. Their will be nothing left to go through after the lava flows over their homes. I feel so bad for these people in iceland. Please help your fellow citizens get through this.

LoL. Lava doesn't "damage" a house. It devours it.
