"What is it?"

Well I was hoping you'd tell me, you're the one with a telescope here...

“No you’re not going mad, it IS pulsating”
That’s beside the point, because I am indeed going mad.

I appreciate the fact that you took photos everyday for 5 months. To make a still frame motion picture of something so incredible... I enjoy space and the unknown in the great beyond.. thank you for allowing me to experience this with you.

From Wikipedia The star R Monocerotis has lit up a nearby cloud of gas and dust, but the shape and brightness slowly changes visibly even in small telescopes over weeks and months, and the nebula looks like a small comet.

One explanation proposed for the variability is that dense clouds of dust near R Mon periodically block the illumination from the star. This casts a temporary shadow on the nearby clouds.

What’s cool about that photo is that you’re actually seeing the speed of light going through the clouds of gas

The moment he scratched his head and said "this is absolutely gonna blow you away"🤣

It's a nebula measuring over 1 light year across, it's illuminated by a star that has a dust cloud orbiting it, what you are seeing as pulses is the shadow of the dust cloud moving out over a great distance, in other words you are seeing the movement of the speed of light over a light year!
